I also use Schmid, Schmidt, Schmitt, Schmitz, Schmied or Roeper (lol three's Company with Don Knots), Rupert, Rhobert, or Bert. Infact, just so you all know...your real world name is not original and has probably been used for the last 1000 years or more in various forms unless you are the child of a celebrity. Why can you not be origional? Take a name, move the letters around, try to make it look...right in your mind...and there you go.

Can program them to autoflag to be renamed after a certain time. Don't have to delete them, just give them random characters in their name that makes the game say NOPE NOPE NOPE

At people saying it's uncreative, etc...Degren is my handle. It's the name I use for all games, it's the name I use to be identified by others. I have like six or seven backups, but I no longer like to use them. It's some strange attachment to a name I made up a few decades ago. It might be uncreative, but I don't pride myself on being able to make up fake names...if you do, grats?

If I'd had an old, ancient character on here named Degren, I'd be requesting a name swap or something as well.

Hello, hello again.

OP How do even know if the character is inactive ?

I have characters that have never been in a player corporation.
They don't show up on kill boards and have never posted on the forums.
It doesn't mean they are inactive.

faceless.

AFAIK login requires recustomization for old characters.

In fact, while we're at it, why do we even allow numbers ? Eh, I'll let that slide, for now.

Bottom line : we need to restrict even more names, not open up those that used to be taken.
Stop being so unoriginal, dammit !

...

Heck, I'd probably even reject my own current name right now for not being "proper namey" enough (what's with the single letter there, huh?) and make myself add some more letters.

I think characters should be automatically deleted after a few years of inactivity. I mean lets face it if a dude hasn't played since 2005 there's no chance of him even remembering his password, much less randomly coming back to a game he hasn't played in almost a decade.

For one thing there are a lot of characters with no portrait, which means the haven't logged in since before incarna. That's just one example. Another is that the dude's last post was a ragequit post from 2004.There are several ways to tell.

There realistically are not enough archaic names to merit this. Eve has to low a subscriber number in it's entire entire history to have to enforce a wipe. You do realize that there as many used names as new subscriptions in half a years time for other MMO's right?

Something clever

Actually my current Alliance leader just resubbed after being inactive since 2005......so guess that kinda blows that little theory to bits.

Nothing further needs be said.

Now if only CCP would introduce a bare minimum of sense in names allowed, too damn many ridiculous ones around ..

As much as I understand the reasoning behind it I have to disagree. Mostly because it sets a precedent about affecting character (names) based on arbitrary rules, which is something we really need to stay away from. Also, we don't need to see any "cool" well known names used by players. At least those old farts had the decency to go inactive with them.

All the coolest names are based on characters from old TV series, but with transposed or added letters.

Iv seen alot of alts that are in use that have never set foot outside of a noob corp, trader alts, price checking alts and so and and so forth.

On top of that it could be a database issue, depending on the way a database is configured it might not be possible to delete a name from it..

Some databases that i have worked on once i have created and named a specific screen or section or button or whatever and submitted it, i can delete the name so it no longer appears, but that name is still within the database and cannot be used again without a full fresh install of the database. CCP could have something similar.

More than likely down to just not wanting to delete characters made by people who possibly could come back. I know if i quit for a few years and came back and my char was gone in my pretty annoyed.

Good point about the creativity thing, i most likley really should just stick with somthing i created and not somthing someone else has already thought of haha, I also agree about similar naming restrictions, but i kinda think that alot of folks would rage if they couldnt get 69DarthMaul69 since DarthMaul was either taken or a prohibited name. Some folks think that adding numbers to their name makes them original. Like for example the name i like is cool and all but i would kinda feel like a chump for just adding some random numbers to it. I guess i need to reach deep into my imagination and think of somthing, even if its stupid it will still be original!
