I think the true answer to this thread is, "Who friggin' cares!"

I think the correct term is to call them whatever the freakin heck they want to be called, whether it be Mary, Jim, Jory, Ju Pei, or Samuel bloody Adams.

In my experience, any reference to a people by their cultural origination, nationality, area of the world is often offensive to them. That's simply because it being used in reference is typically because it seems like it is an explanation for why they are the way they are, and quite often is exactly how it is being used.

Oriental, Asian, American, Canadian, Chimpanzee; no difference to me. The only thing that matters is a persons name as far as calling them something, and often that isn't even really all that relevent or necessary. Sure beats "Hey you!" though.

People place way too much importance on where you are from or where your family orriginated. The only person that should matter to, is the person from there, or descended from people from 'there.' Wherever 'there' is. Even then, it certainly shouldn't be of all consuming importance, but rather, should be a matter of respect for family or traditions, or some small pride that doesn't extend to arrogance or feelings of superiority over others who originate elsewhere.

Arguing over this crap isn't going to solve anything and it doesn't make any of you look good, right or wrong, because of the importance you are placing on it and how hard you are fighting over it.

P.S. for the OPs sake, you probably wouldn't have noticed as they are likely speaking or typing primarily English with limited or no indication such as would define them from anyone else.
