As an asian myself the disfavor of the word mostly originates from the same bucket as calling a korean a japanese or a chinese a japanese or the like.

Also asia is pertty effing big im sure you could offend more russians calling them asians or aghanitani.

Dust 514's CPM 1 Iron Wolf Saber Eve mail me about Dust 514 issues.

its a horribly clumsy way to communicate using another language's alphabet.

Not sure what that has to do with anything i said.

Someone in the west getting a Kanji tattoo doesn't mean they can communicate easily with the language. The same applies to Japanese people who might use the English alphabet for something. They just think it's cool looking.

Some people on both sides do make an effort to fully learn them. Probably more people in Japan learning English, judging from the high demand for English teachers.

Wonder why its not like that over here... Id I ask someone if theyre from Canada when theyre from Minnesota they just correct me and go about their day. Or is you ask a british it theyre australian or vice versa. Ive never had one actually get angry or have it come to blows or anything, the strongest Ive ever had with that is something to the affect of "why cant you Yanks tell us apart?" then they laughed

It IS however funny when Americans get tattoos of Japanese or chinese characters only to find out years later the artist didnt put what he thought or the guy getting it mistranslated it and it isnt what he thought it was.

Like Id like to get 巫術 or just 巫 but not before I got someone to make sure I was right in what I thought it was (tell me what it means an we'll see if Im right btw lol)

It has a lot to do with centuries of murder, slavery, subjugation... in short, learn your history.

Yeah I figured. History of prejudice tends to breed it.

Sodomy?

Was there sodomy?

Difficult to tell people apart when it's all from the perspective of buggery.

Welcome Japanese Asians, to the EVE-O Forum Fun where nobody can handle advice or have a descent discussion.

You turned a friendly thread where they were most welcome into a **** posting match about your stupid idea of what is PC and what is not.

The word is ASIAN. Oriental is your freaking lamp.

I hope you know that oriental means eastern, and that the word is still used outside the US.

I've lived in San Francisco for 17 freaking years and have had to obviously interact with THOUSANDS of ASIANS from the many different countries that are Asian. The City itself has the highest concentration of native Chinese outside the Mainland.

This is the same as the difference between "black" and "colo(u)red".

Just because those other countries choose to still use the denigrating Oriental (reserved for objects), does not make it OK to them at all. They do indeed percieve it as racist, so WATCH IT on the forums if they are ever here since racism is a EULA violation when posting.

Just fair warning.

The term oriental derives from the Latin for east. Oriental means anything to the east. It was used for lands, people, cultures and goods. Historically it meant the middle east, rather than the far east. At one point the Orient was a Roman province. Later it described a Muslim, or Islam, and then later it came to mean people and places further east.

It's not usually considered to be pejorative - you could just as easily use "An Asian", or any other racial epithet in a pejorative manner.

What makes "Asian" so PC? Lumping people of vastly different cultures together (e.g. Indians and Japanese) just because they're different from "us" seems pretty racist to me.

This one I will vouch for. I take jabs at people all day long and I can take them back just as well. But the how to properly classify Asians bit wasn't needed. All I have to say to that is Ninja please.

AND a huge swath of Southern Asia from Northern Japan to Western Saudi Arabia and environs, including INDIA.

Another round of applause for the American Educational System at its finest.
I like how you go about being politically correct, then go and make a huge generalization without knowing if a player is in fact from the United States or not. Also, American is way too broad. You should use "United State's educational system" as that suggest everyone from the Americas.

I do say the newest generation of koreans seem to have forgiven the japanese mostly I live in the states now but one of the local cheap colleges have alot of koreans there and they speak more japanese than korean which I find it very hard to belive.

Also correct me if Im wrong but isnt calling anyone in south america, canada, or mexico/central america also insulting?

I'm Southeast Asian and I can say with confidence that most of us don't care what name the world groups us under, as long as you continue buying into the idea of our exotic locales, tradtional herbal remedies, and vague ancient philosophical texts that we ourselves don't really much care for anymore but are more than happy to sell by the bundle to hapless tourists.

But to be serious - Asians are as diverse as any other ethnic with regards to opinions. Instead of making gross generalizations about an entire grouping of people, take the time to get to really know the other individual you're talking to. Contrary to popular belief the average guy doesn't get all touchy feely when someone else can't identify the exact location he's from. It's all in your attitude. I'd take a clueless tourist honestly curious about my ethnicity over the smartass proudly proclaiming that he knows everything about my culture anytime.
