Speak for yourself.

I blame a lack of proper noodles for both...

The word is ASIAN. Oriental is your freaking lamp.

I hope you know that oriental means eastern, and that the word is still used outside the US.

I've lived in San Francisco for 17 freaking years and have had to obviously interact with THOUSANDS of ASIANS from the many different countries that are Asian. The City itself has the highest concentration of native Chinese outside the Mainland.

This is the same as the difference between "black" and "colo(u)red".

Just because those other countries choose to still use the denigrating Oriental (reserved for objects), does not make it OK to them at all. They do indeed percieve it as racist, so WATCH IT on the forums if they are ever here since racism is a EULA violation when posting.

Just fair warning.

Living in San Francisco makes you SO WORLDLY!

Protip: I've lived in a half dozen countries, Thailand included, and spent a lot of time in Korea. Words do not have the same connotations or even meanings in different countries. Your locally perceived associations with the word "oriental" do not extend outside US borders.

The word oriental very literally means eastern or "where the sun rises". You know, like "the far east". Do you find that term offensive? How about "land of the rising sun"?

Don't peddle your wonky interpretation of the word as if it was globally considered true. Plenty of people describe themselves as oriental. This is as silly as "African American" being used to describe someone born and raised in Africa.

Just asking if anyone has seen an influx in the amount of Japanese players in our community. The press release says there are 10s of 1000s of new players and if so I think we should say hi. I just cant find any of them.

This is a true, there is a section of the classifieds in my local paper which boasts all about their Oriental Ladies and Massage.

Welcome Japanese Asians, to the EVE-O Forum Fun where nobody can handle advice or have a descent discussion.

Sounds like you want to defend racism here.

Are you insane? Sounds to me like you are trying to defend overbearing political correctness here, and have no idea what racism actually means.

Would you call an African man African American? Because I guarantee he'll find that a hell of a lot more offensive than the term African.

Since you seem incapable of reading the link I provided for you:

"While a small number of reference works used in the United States describe Oriental as pejorative, or antiquated but not necessarily offensive, the American Heritage Book of English Usage notes that:
It is worth remembering, though, that Oriental is not an ethnic slur to be avoided in all situations. It is most objectionable in contemporary contexts and when used as a noun, as in the appointment of an Oriental to head the commission. But in certain historical contexts, or when its exotic connotations are integral to the topic, Oriental remains a useful term."

[...]

"In British English, the term Oriental is not considered pejorative or offensive, and refers to people from East and Southeast Asia. Asian is generally used only to mean people from South Asia."

[...]

"The word Oriental, in place of Asian, is seldom used in colloquial conversation in Australia and is understood, but considered anachronistic rather than offensive."

[...]

"In German Orient is usually used synonymously with the Arab World and Persia."

Try visiting another country sometime.
