Hey,

Microsoft released the consumer preview of Windows 8 today, has anyone installed it yet and tried to play Eve on it ?
I'm not sure I'll go through the trouble of installing it if I can't play Eve on it P

I just ran the compatibility report for Win8, it says Eve will run fine, in fact the only thing I have that isn't usable is MS security essentials and I'll have to reinstall my amd drivers. I'm going to be running it in a VM (and hopefully not get banned :D) with Eve and a few other games to test it, thankfully VMware provides SM3 "support"

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

I used the developer edition a few months ago and it worked. So i guess it should work now.

Installed 8 on my backup machine yesterday and tried Eve this afternoon and both TQ and SiSi clients work as expected.

Just had to remember to run the dxsetup.exe in the \bin folder to update the required files otherwise the client would start and then drop to the taskbar without running.

How does the computer perform compared to W7?

Have you seen any performance improvements (or degradation) ?

To those who asked, I was running 8 on my backup machine, a dual core Athlon with an Nvidea 8800 gpu so nothing special.

As far as I could tell everything ran exactly the same as under Windows 7 and from first observations Windows 8 on a PC, is 7 with a pretty face. I ran 8 in ‘desktop mode’ as the ‘tiled mode’ doesn’t work very well on the desktop unless you have a touch screen.

Using the all new Task Manager in advanced mode I noted both clients used about the same amount of CPU percentage and memory stayed at around 1.6 out of 2 Gig.
FPS in captains quarters with interiors set to medium was 30 in the quarters and capped at 60 on the balcony.

Flying in space capped at 60 most of the time with setting on high, no shadows, and post processing on low and no AA.

So nothing really changed it just worked. Hope that answers your questions?

Given that CCP is a quite intensive Microsoft shop one could assume that one, two or something close to everyone on the roll has been able to try win8 for quite a while, and probably even a tad earlier than most public tests.

I think one can be assured that EvE will work as expected in Win8.

So it will take 3 patches and reset your UI at 2 times ;)

CCP Greyscale: As to starbases, we agree it's pretty terrible, but we don't want to delay the entire release just for this one factor.

I am haveing serious issues, my graphics card is ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200, when I open the screen the graphics are fine for a few seconds, afterwards, the screen is suffers from significant large triangles in the middle of the graphical display. It seems like a rendering error, probably because Win 8 is not offically supported. I will upload screens in a bit, also EvE worked fine in Win 7 on the same machine... I shouldn't have freakin updated ..... grr....

I watched a preview on youtube, and I didn't like how the tiled screen works with Dual Screens. I will be skipping this next Windows platform.

My experiences with windows 8 are that it's not stable period.

Everything runs, but not for as long as you would want. Plenty of BSoD episodes witnessed.

Recommend nvidia over AMD cards always. Drivers are horrendous for AMD

Windows is always backwards compatible, if it weren't I doubt they would be releasing new versions all the time

Works fine. Windows 8 is just Win 7 with tablet and phone functionality. Certainly not worth buying for a laptop or desktop. Same kernel.

Just better IO, manageability, network performance, virtualization, memory usage, etc etc... All of the fun stuff that is new and exciting is behind the scenes.

I saw absolutely no improvement in networking, virtualization or memory usage in my benchmarks. But hey if you say so.

Rule of thumb, always skip every other Windows OS. Get xp, skip vista, get w7, skip w8 and so forth, it has worked since Windows 95...
