Are low-sec gates guns limiting small scale pvp ?

I've been thinking about this for a while and as of now if you start a fight at a station or gate with anything under a battlecruiser hull you will most likely get shredded by gate guns.

Isn't this an incredibly limiting factor for small scale pvp ? Frow what i"ve heard they were put in place to counter some sort of exploit , but i don't kwow the details.

Would we see more cruiser/frigates fights if gate guns were more "reasonable" (being able to speed tank them with frigs , they do less damage to smaller targets , ect...) ?

no you wouldn't see more pvp in lowsec, it would remove it in all forms. Gate guns ARE WHY frigate hull pvp is so popular in low sec. Gate guns are one of the few reasons why its not devoid of inhabitants.

They may be a PITA, but the increased difficulty opens a lot of doors unique to lowsec.

I hate low sec as a new player as for a few months, I could only fly frigs as a scout and I usually died if I tried to do anything on a gate

I think removing gate guns, station guns and caps from lo-sec woould make it a much more small hull pvp friendly place

As someone who lives in lowsec and does small gang PVP in frigates, I can tell you that, despite their being a massive pain in the ass, they actually help with PvP.

Removing them would encourage two things:

  1. Gate camps -- Right now there aren't very many ships with the scan resolution, firepower, and tank to pull off a lowsec gate camp. Usually it has to be done in a gang, and the gang has to be set up in a way to not get killed by the gate guns, which gimps its abilities in PvP otherwise. This is good as it discourages gate camping, and it makes it less of a death trap to jump unscouted through lowsec - something solo and small gang roamers should be grateful for.
  2. Gate camps 2.0 -- Even when someone does pull off what they think is a gate camp, they are often very vulnerable. This is to frigates in particular, which can dodge the ganker's damage until the gate guns take care of him.
  3. Station games -- you know what 0rphanage and other such corps do in hisec? Imagine that in lowsec, except being able to shoot anyone because there are no immediate consequences. This would make the skill threshold for lowsec living higher, and reduce lowsec population.


There can still be frigate-on-frigate PvP on stations or gates if one of the people has sec status under -5. If you really want more gate and station fighting, get a very tanky ship (Prophecy works quite well to tank the guns actually), or join FW.

it would actually be the opposite.

Gate guns enable small ships to travel freely in low sec, which means they can move around and find/join/create fights. Obviously just not on the gates.

Without gate guns, remote sebo'd interceptors would lock down every highsec -> lowsec gate in the game, allowing no one through until another gang busts the camp and sets up their own.

it would enable frigates to participate better in gang warfare, but it would not enable substantially more frigate on frigate pvp.

Gates in general are limiting PvP in every aspect of this game.

No one with any sense takes something that can't easily escape a gate camp through a dangerous gate, and many just avoid them altogether. Leaving the poor gatecampers wondering where everyone is, and shaking their fist at all the people who avoid them easily.

Gate guns actually help small gang PVP on the flip side, so they work as intended IMO. Granted gate guns don't do a ton of damage but it's enough damage in many cases to allow you to take out gate camps that out number you.

Get rid of guns and prepare for 3000+ scan res ceptors to be on gate for every camp and for alpha fleets to sit on undock with remote sensor boosting.

The advantage of a bad memory is that one can enjoy the same good things for the first time several times.

Removing gate guns would help the blobbers more so I say no.

I personally would prefer (and I know almost everyone in the community will disagree, tee hee) if guns were removed and instead they added a CONCORD spawner like in hi-sec.

BUT WAIT

Before you get all frisky, let me explain. Have it sort of like a '911' sort of thing. Fighting happens, CONCORD ships out and arrives in substantially lower time than they would in hi-sec; and not as many ships. Not enough to actively outright -murder- the person (as part the point of losing the ship in return for killing theirs) but think of something like a cluster of frigates/cruisers. Maaaaybe a battleship but that'd be pressing it.

You could get away from them, you could stay and fight them; hell if you actually managed to kill them all the more power to you; give like a standings increase to the NPC Pirate factions and a hit to your empire standings. Have it to where CONCORD isn't just this entity that is there to give you money for killing pirates and gang-**** you when you do something bad.

Just a thought. -Shrug.-
