Make low sec mining profitable

Seems like this would be a win-win. Some carebears would look into ways to survive low sec mining (corp ops or hire security), pvp junkies would have more targets, industrialists would have more customers. It appears that low sec is the most under utilized aspect of the game, give us incentive to go there.

Cut hi sec mineral yields by half...I couldn't stand that big of a paycut, would definitely look into low sec mining.

Speaking from back when I used to be a Courier; just go set up a POS Tower in Derelik. Place is almost always empty with no stations out there and I don't think it's a Faction Warfare field, local is almost always 0.

To be fair, this is more about being able to do them solo when there's no corpmates on than something inherent to the sec status system. Missions (and mining) are for grinding when you don't have a buddy to pvp with.

Mining in lowsec will never be profitable in comparison to the risk. So really instead of trying to nerf this or nerf that, why not just change what low-sec is all about. Remove mineral belts from lowsec and add in a form of static gas clouds. It would help give low-sec the niche it needs as well as remove the fact that lowsec will always be the bastard middle child when it comes to mining.

Low sec mining suffers from middle child syndrome.

In order to mine efficently in low sec, one needs a larger operation. Orca + Several barges + full security team. Any fewer miners and the operation isn't worth the security team's time. Any fewer security people and the operation is vulnerable.

If you can assemble such a team, you're better off mining in null or in a WH for the ABCs. If you can't or are solo, you'll make more in high sec simply because you lose a lot less time/isk to piracy (or guarding against it) compared to low sec.


That said, I think we'll naturally see some miners migrate to low sec. With the removal of meta 0 loot drops and drone poo, the availability of rare minerals like Zyd and Mega in high sec will sharply decrease as those minerals cannot be gained from High Sec mining alone.

That doesn't solve the logistics headache but the person who can balance the risk/reward of low sec can stand to make a bundle.

In the cat-and-mouse game that is low sec, there is no shame in learning to be a better mouse.

As Empires grow and expand they need more room. Seems like Concord and the Empires would expand into 0.4 systems

And even null bears cyno passed most of it. In terms of making low sec more profitable for mining? While I haven't done it, I'm sure if you were to scan them you would ind there are loads of very lucrative Grav Plex in low sec. When you consider it isn't even "safe" to mine in high sec, lol-sec? Not even worth the bother.

Its because the only kind of mining in Eve atm is the full-on strip mining variety. Big volumes and lots of time needed to make a profit.

Think of it like setting up a quarry with those big industrial diggers, or an oil well. You can do it in a 1st world country like the US with no risk to yourself because of solid property rights and police(high sec), or a poor country with a stable government that you can persuade/bribe to leave you alone(null sec), but you can't do that in a lawless place like Somalia there's a war on and no stable government(low sec).

The only type of mining that could become viable is something with a very low volume and high price. In real life, think panning for gold in California or diamond mining in Sierra Leone. Dangerous, but it paid well enough that people went and did it anyway.
Atm the closest to that is exploration sites, which are quite tempting but do require a decent combat ship.

Lowsec is fine. Bounty, LP, asteroids...all better then highsec. You can't nerf highsec anymore and say its riskfree...it doesn't get any safer then it does now and unlike other MMOs you can still shoot them with the intent to kill...nothing actually stops you but the ******* puckering sensation that you will lose to CONCORD which holds you back.

What happens when the area of a given species exceeds the carrying capacity it can sustain and the prey over populates?
^^ it starts to stagnate and kill itself off...kind of like recent activities in the highsec market.

What happens when the area of a given species is invaded by a predator in large numbers?
^^ predators kill off all the prey and leave the area a barren wasteland devoid of life beyond the few people traveling through it. This is what lowsec is.

Congrats!

You morons killed off lowsec and its your fault there is no one there. Your actions shot you in the foot and you are responsible for it, you can move level 4s to lowsec or nerf asteroids but people will still not go to lowsec when the predator populaton by wannabe lone wolves kill off the prey as quickly as they see it.

Or you could get a group of individuals, expand to an alliance, build a support of industry and mission running to create your own little empire in lowsec. Its your call, but the longer you keep playing Medal of Duty: Halo-Strike instead of just leading a group yourself to the Promised / Profit land the longer nothing gets done.

The only kind of mining in EVE is bot mining. Or simulating bot mining as much as possible. You have to do that, because 5 years of Bot Miners mining 23x7 have completely destroyed the economy.

Here's a idea. Every time you activate a Miner, a Captcha appears on the screen. If you don't answer it in 5-10 seconds, the miner deactivates. It works for every free MMORPG in existence.

It can be temporary. Would be easy to implement -- add it in the May update, with the understanding that it'll be removed once the botter situation is solved.

"But you big bad Goonie, I AFK mine with 23 accounts and I don't want to have to worry about checking on all 23 clients throughout the day. What about me?"

To which I would reply: Hi The WIs. Hope you are well. I do understand that this would make your life a bit more complex, but at the same time, you're not really playing EVE per say, are you? Any "active" activity you can do in EVE while also taking a nap or cooking dinner is... kinda stupid.

For a more long term solution, revamp mining to not suck. And start pushing Highsec miners towards Low and Null.

CAPTCHA is a terrible idea not just in Eve but in general. They are very easy to override and have been since they came out. That is why they keep making them harder to decode even to the point where people can't even read them.

If you replace the captcha with an actual immersive gameplay mechanic of some sort, sure.

Its funny though. Your captcha requirement would be more strenous then some of the cleanup phases in level 4 missions, especially when flying a droneboat. If you're going to make mining more difficult you should probably do the same thing for missioning.

For people to mine in low sec, there needs to be a few roids of ABC there and significant belts of all the other undermined stuff like Hemorphite, Hedbergite, Gneiss, Dark Ochre, and Spodumain. If low sec had those roids and all the ABC resided in Null or in grav belts then people would go out and mine because it's worth it. Right now, nothing worth mining in low sec for the risk of return and cost of setting up to do it.
