FTP RTS on steam now

Has anyone gotten into this yet? I'm not really a fan of FTP's because of the store generally being shoved in your face but my friend talked me into this one to dink around with.

I started an undead army last night and so far it looks pretty fun. It's got a real Warhammer fantasy battle feel for me. After level 7 you can join some world map I guess, but I do know that you can join instant battles by level 2, in which my piddly army was promptly crushed. What I liked about the battle though was that each side had multiple players commanding their own forces and I can easily see coordination winning those fights.

anyways if you are bored you should look this up.

Hmm, interesting. Kind of looks like a fantasy version of the Total War series which I'm a big fan of.

I'm up to level 3 so far given the time I usually have to pay. I've noticed that other players tend to be heavy on Calvary and archers.

Those instant battles that I was talking about aren't a 1v1 situation but rather 7-8 players with a pretty wide range of levels. I'm usually the underdog in most battles so I try to just support another players forces. And it gives you a random map as well (I'm guessing this is a feature in WOT as well).

Equipping units is pretty straight forward as well. Gear is either purchases via gems or gold, with gems being able to be purchase with cash. You can earn gems for each battle fought as well but it's not a very fast pace.

Had a battle last night that I found rather comical, where one player instructed us to all guard one hill. So we get up there and we wait. And wait. And wait. Finally we send a scout out and it turns out the opponent was doing the same thing so it ended up being a stalemate. I told our 'general' aka the guy who told us to guard the hill that he appeared to have a enemy general of equal prowess. He didn't find it very funny however.

So far having a fun time. (consider it is F2p). Not the greatest camera or control but other wise fun.

Interesting to customize your guys, and leveling (to unlock) or get a larger army is fun. Hoping to get to 7 to see how the world pvp thing is.

If you're a fan of RTS DL and try as it's free and entertaining.

My only gripe is the pairing.

Couple more battles tonight and I'm really starting to learn my units. It's a good idea to keep track of their symbols as it seems that you can't have multiples of the same type on the line at once, at least at the lower levels.

My heavy infantry are really becoming strong. Had one battle where they got surrounded by 3 units and I put them in stand ground stance and kept throwing a shield on them and they actually took down 2 units before they fell.

And we had a battle where one guy on our team dropped at the start of map and the guy with the biggest army was afk so instead of facing the enemy head on I instructed the last team member to run past the afk guy and let his army soak up the damage. It was almost effective as his troops fought back but we still just didn't quite do enough damage. Really want to keep an eye on enemy units that may try to flank around to go after your archers.

Looks like the Warhammer: Mark of Chaos layout / engine.

This is more true than you think. On many of the maps with buildings I can't help but think empire. And while you see the humanoid creatures in pretty much any DnD related subject the fact that they have beastmen again makes me think of Warhammer.

To top all this off I finally got a look at the world map and I **** you not when I say it looks like they took the warhammer map, rearranged a little bit of the topography and called it their own. The first icon I noticed was Black water lake. The grey mountains are right there on the right separating the empire from the wastes. Brettonia and the empire are kind of molded into one land mass but you can almost pinpoint where Altdorf and Middenheim should be and the elf lands again are right below with the chaos wastes to the north. Hell we're even fighting for territories right in the same areas. The wastes....I mean desert is still cut off from us by the mountains.

Not that I'm truly offended by this as I love Warhammer but I wouldn't be surprised if more loyal fans of GW see the similarities.

Yeah I saw the similarities off the bat, rather wished they had done warhammer itself to use with, but I'm sure gamesworkshop would've had some pita issue with it or w/e that made it impossible, shame. Nice to see love for rts's again though, I'm still hoping some civilizations-esq with a wel ldefined rts aspect mmo done. I can dream.
