Except, of course, that it is still growing every year.

Asheron's Call
Release date(s) November 2, 1999

BY FAR still the best MMO i ever ever played.. shame it bled dry when WoW came and a MMO with almost no players isnt fun (or i would still be playing it)

Point taken, but it's technically true.

It's a niche product with unique tech. This is probably the best we can expect.

I believe the longest would be Meridian 59 (1996), although Ultima Online (1997), Everquest 1 (1999) and Asheron's Call (1999) would be considered close contenders.

Terra and The Realm Online are both from '96

Tensix/Project visitor could be older lol

UO (the original graphical MMO) is still running, and probably won't be shutting down anytime soon.

NWN released on AOL in the 90's would be the first graphical Online RPG.

The oldest still running is probably m59.

Not even close. EQ1 is still going as far as I know. So is UO.

Meridian 59 is still running. 1996.

That game can be considered the true granddaddy of all modern MMO's.

Yes, there were MUDs and other experiments running, but Meridian is the first MMO which uses modern conventions - Standard levelling, gear, graphic environment. It's also the first commercially succesful MMO and it planted the seed for EQ in particular and was a yardstick for UO.

I still log sometimes in my old MUD :D ...that was real intense PVP back in the day, all you saw were lines of text in Ansi colors to represent damage or actions.

I suppose EVE might be the longest-running-while-still-being-updated-MMO out there right now...
It's still getting updates and expansions as we speak... While the makers of Everquest has long since moved on to the browner pastures of Everquest 2...
And Ultima Online... Haven't heard anything much from them in several years.

Oh.. And Anarchy Online is still running, but not exactly active anymore either.

EQ had an xpac like a year ago? Less than a year ago?

Same with UO

Hello, hello again.
