I think it would be great to be able to spin the ship using the up down and left and right arrows. Or perhaps some other way. Please no troll posts

I do not agree. In my eyes, it makes very little sense for a spaceship to have a 'steering wheel' and could spoil immersion. Current controls are perfectly fine.

CCP has said in the past that they would consider this if there was an in-game role for it. "It would be cool" is not a reason. When CCP has introduced new ships for no reason other than they are cool it has caused all sorts of headaches, so they are wary of doing anything like that again.

What could be an in-game role for it?

Edit: BTW everyone knows the attitude of ships you see is unique to your client, and other people on other clients see the ships pointing in different directions? The easiest way to see this is when a large ship warps up to you. It looks like it is sideways and quickly rotates and points the correct direction. But the pilot does not see that rotation. The reason is the server only sends the ship's location and velocity to the clients. Each client figures out how to display the ship for itself. So to add ship attitude information, the server would have to send more data to each client, increasing lag.

Not a steering wheel and you wouldn't have to use it only if you wanted your ship to be upside down as it were. But for the sake of immersion argument space has not right side up or upside down but eve has made us have to keep the ships on a level plane.

I still see it as a steering wheel. It makes no sense to have this for any in-game purpose, aside from "I would like it".

I just turn my monitor upside down.

As for there not being up and down in space, I just assumed that the stargates and stations provided navigation updates to keep all ships oriented the same way. It makes sense when you figure that you have to approach the station docks a certain way to get in or when jumping.

Still would be cool if I could roll my Golem sideways and pretend the engineers read the instructions sideways.

It would make sense if when being fired upon by missiles and turrets, you could actually avoid the projectiles by moving your ship. This game is a bit unrealistic on the HOMING nature of the weapons and the inability to occlude anything (IE. you fire through asteroids). The collision mechanics in this game are WAY behind.

Factual statement : Ships in EVE don't really "face" anything server-side. They're points with a velocity vector and (AFAIK) a bounce sphere centered on that said point. The whole "facing" thing is a strictly client-side thing.
Speculative : You could add inside the client controls for how the ship appears visually on screen, but that would not really alter the direction the ship is actually heading in any way.
