It has obviously outlasted WOW and is still growing.

Is it the longest running mmo ever? if so i think it deserves an news article in gaming mags on its 10th birthday.

Ultima Online (1997) and EverQuest (1999) are still running so no, not even close.

Not even the longest Space MMO.

DarkSpace is still running.

Edit: nm/ VO. It wasn't offically released first and was only still in beta.

Came here to say this.

UO (the original graphical MMO) is still running, and probably won't be shutting down anytime soon.

Wow and EVE are still strong, so neither has "out lasted" the other.

Also, Runescape was released in 2001, so yeah. Everquest is also still going from 1999. Ultima online from 1997 is also still alive.

The Realm Online from 1995 is still claimed to be active; not sure if it's actually alive, or just has die hard fans hosting it themselves.

You could certainly make the case that it's the longest MMO still growing in subscriber base.

Meridian 59 is still running. That wins by far. And I agree with the others, I miss the old UO so much. Before AOS was my time to shine to the Atlantic shard.

Its only about a year older that WoW and WoW isnt old

I was playing a mmo called Ten Six back in the days of HEAT.net that turned into a game valled Project Visitor now. I dunno when it launched tho; I cant et a time frame on when HEAT.Net was around

wasnt '59 the first graphical "modern" (very loosely phrased) MMO?

Then theres Jumpgate (the first one)

Wikipedia sez 1996
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tibia_%28computer_game%29
1997
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultima_Online
1997
Hostile Space 1997
Meridian 59 : Evolution 06/06/96
The Realm Online 12/31/96

And like I said I think Project visitor in its old life combined with the new is older lol

I used to play one called Hyperiums, still kicking around I believe.
Came out in 2001, not anything to interesting about it except that it came up with the PLEX idea before CCP (you used to buy credits for your account, 1 credit = 3months sub, credits could be traded on the open market) ^^

There should be a rather awesome pic here

I believe the longest would be Meridian 59 (1996), although Ultima Online (1997), Everquest 1 (1999) and Asheron's Call (1999) would be considered close contenders.

The first 3-D MMO.

The first "graphical" MMO was Neverwinter Nights on AoL. Way back in '91.

Actually Island of Kesmai was the first "graphical" MMO even though it was ASCII. 1985.
