Hi,

i have been doing both gang and solo PvP for a about 2 months now, and every encounter teaches me alot about what ships i should engage or not .

At the moment, i usually fly gallente brutix or thorax. Meaning blasters, and meaning very short range fights What?. Which obviously can be a problem when facing ships that can keep me at long range with ease. Cry

I don't mind learning the possible match-ups the hard way, which usually results in me loosing my ship. It's something one should accept when venturing in lowsec. But i was wondering if their was some kind of match-up guide or tutorial on the net to speed up the process without having to blow-up my ships.

Any advice or source will be appreciated.

It's very difficult to produce a hard "guide" on to what you should and shouldn't engage in a given ship.

A lot depends on the age / skills of the character in the ship you're thinking of engaging and how it is fit.

Your knowledge of what you can and can't engage will expand as you continue to play, either through knowing your own ship capabilities and that of your enemies (playing against it on the test server or running off fits in EFT is a good way of learning a ship, even if you can't fly it) or by simply remembering what "dicked you" last time you fought it.

Mmm so the hard way it is i guess.

Never though of using the test server. Might be an interesting thing to try. How does it work exactly? YOu can export your character in or you can pre-make one?

PVP is about strategy and tactics which can differ for a ship depending on the fit you use. So instead of pitting ships against eachother you should learn the different strategies specific ships can and can't do. Once you know what strategy and tactics your own ship/fitting can and can't do, AND you can guesstimate what strategy the ship you're about to attack will employ then you will know the outcome pretty much. Strategy very much depends on fitting and the knowledge of the pilot.

For instance you can expect a generic frigate pilot attacking another frigate will fit for short range ammo so if you do the same then it all comes down to numbers like dps, tracking, damage types and EHP. But if you're smart about it and use a fit that can keep another frig at range a bit, say 5-7km or so) AND you fit T2 long range ammo then all of a sudden the outcome can be entirely different.

The vast majority of pvpers don't really take things that far, most of them are used to fleets and following orders rather than giving it some proper thought themselves. Good solo pvpers WILL take stuff like that into account, so rather than just fighting a ship you fight a pilot who may have a specific fit & strategy for his ship.

TL;DR, it's not that simple or set in stone.

Your character will get mirrored on the test server every so often (so you won't always have the latest skills you trained on Tranquility).

You can find a guide on accessing the test server here:
