Why exactly does the Nighthawk have less powergrid than the T1 version of the same hull? 365 points less in fact.

Additionally it has the least amount of powergrid of all the command ships. It has 55% of the powergrid of the Caldari fleet command ship, while the ships belonging to the other factions have at most a 5% differenct between the powergird of fleet and field command ships.

NH balance - is the Nighthawk actually underpowered? I see people saying that there's things that they'd like to be able to do but can't due to grid issues, but is this driven by "the NH is really underpowered/under-used compared to other ships in its class because of this grid issue"?

I think they're pretty fine as-is.

Can't be bothered to search for a link, but that particular quote dates back to Nov 2008. By 'they' he means command ships as a whole.

edit: nvm, here you go:

They are pretty good its just that the drake is a bit too powerful in comparison.

Yeah, it is lacking compared to the rest of the Field CSes. Here's a nice writeup that the CSM did a while ago that seems to have been ignored by CCP: http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Boost_Nighthawk_%28CSM%29

Wow that is one terrible fit, mwd + shield booster + cap booster? Its meant to do passive or buffer tank and it powergrid works fine for those.
The only problems I see in it is 5 low slots and 6 launchers, move a low to a mid and add another launcher slot and it will be a very nice ship.

Edit: And oh it will need some extra powergrid to fit one more launcher.

As I see it now, the Nighthawk is marginally better than the Drake in a few specific areas at 5 times the cost. By marginal I mean hardly. When compared to other command ships, it is very much lacking. Also the Tengu is not THAT much more expensive yet is way better at the Nighthawk's job than the Nighthawk.

Maybe I should share what I was attempting to do. Just about every command ship has the ability to fit a workable tank/gank fit while allowing a 100MN afterburner to be overfit. Except the Nighthawk. The Nighthawk must give up far more to accomodate such a fit compared to the other command ships.

Well, you got the right answer (that the NH is low on grid) for the wrong reasons (trying to fit the wrong size AB).

No, I'm trying to overfit an afterburner. Try it sometime, you may be surprised with the results.
