turret rigs: burst or collision?

Burst improve rate of fire. Collision improve damage. Both improve dps, yet I have often found that burst gives slightly more dps than collision.

Is there a general rule of thumb for which should be used when you have room for only one? Is it generally, burst for dps and only use collision if you need maximum alpha?

Pretty much. Burst will also screw with your cap, especially if you use tachs (of course).

Burst for PvE, Collision for PVP if you're looking for alpha damage on Artillery etc.

Just say no to gun rigsLol That's always been my take on them, in PvP tank or speed rigs are much more useful.

Yep it's fine too but BURST dps is also very fine ^^

Burst results in slightly more DPS than collision, but more ammo/cap usage. If using a cap-tight laser ship, or one where alpha matters a lot (arty), then use collisions. Otherwise, use bursts.

Above posters are of course right - however I personally prefer collision over burst.

- On a laser boat where reload times don't matter, bursts screw with your cap and cap is life.
- On a projectile ship, you'll have to reload less often increasing the overall DPS.
- Hybrids are a mix between the two

As others already said, they provide higher alpha for a minor drawback in overall dps compared to bursts. Usually higher alpha is preferrable (there's quite a good thread about this in this subforum, cba to find it right now).

I agree with the above statements: technically burst is better but collision is much more practical.
If you fit 2 damage rigs however, fit one of both to avoid stacking penalties.

Bonus hint: burst aerator II has higher base modifier than gyrostabilizer(etc) II, making it stack pretty nicely even with 4 damage lows. T2 burst aerator is really a very nice bang for the buck rig.
