So I played for EVE for the first time about 9 months ago. I played a lot for about three months. I got really into mining and even started a second account to play around with. Eventually I realized mining wasn't as exciting as I had originally thought and got distracted by other games.

I've continued reading and thinking about the EVE universe and just decided to re activate one of my accounts. I've always been intrigued by the sand box nature of the game but at the same time it is so overwhelming I don't know where to start.

Now I'm trying to decide, do I start a brand new character or continue with my mining character even though I don't necessarily intend to continue mining? Would I enjoy mining in a corporation more? If you were to start playing EVE for the first time today, where would start? I really appreciate the advice.

Mining = kiss of death for newbies. Find something else to do. ANYTHING else to do.

Mining with a group is better than solo, but it's still not the most glamorous of professions.

As to trying to figure out what to do in Eve; check this out, pick out something that sounds fun, and go for it.

I'd say stick with the older character. When the day comes that you want/need to do a little bit of mining you'll thank yourself for it. And besides, that character has to have a few skills on it that would be beneficial to any new profession you undertake.

Judging by the fact that they just nerfed 40-50% of the mineral supply out of existance earlier today, mining might become viable.

Just not for the next couple of weeks, I'm expecting the speculator bubble to burst soon.
But after the chaos i suspect it'll settle on a higher price than when you left.

There is a fine line between a post and a signature.

Spent some time looking at http://swiftandbitter.com/eve/wtd/ and think I'll start with some ratting, either straight up or during exploration. Any advice on how to get started in either of these fields?

You buy a ship, put guns on it, and go out looking for rats. For exploring you do the same thing but put a probe launcher on the ship too and probe out each system you go through looking for stuff.

As to what ships to go for, it depends on your current skills. Basic starter exploration ships are typically the Vexor and Arbitrator, or any T1 probing frig if you want to forgo the combat sites. Basic ratting ships are any ships that can deal damage (frigs and up really).

Well I just found out learning skills were refunded. I've got a lot of research to do now! Where to put all these points...

It's weird. People leave their old game because of things they don't like or as they got bored. Then they try to find a new game but are reluctant to try something "new" so effectively they pick the same game as the old one making the same mistake again. And in Case of EVE, which is nothing like other games, they then pick the same boring things to do as what drove them away from the first game :P

Mining has always been crappy income, right now due to a bunch of changes mining is fairly worthwhile but how that will stay after the market and number of miners will stabilise is impossible to know. But that's all really unimportant because MINING IS BORING AS ****! Just because mining makes a tad more isk now doesn't mean it won't bore you out of the game again,

EVE is a sandbox which means that you have options, not limitations. Do what you WANT to do, if you dislike mining don't do it, if you dislike pve grinding don't do it. Put in the effort to move out of your comfort zone and take a "risk" to find something you DO enjoy, whatever it may be. Try stuff, sample stuff, do a week of explorations, have a look at PVP, join an active corp, perhaps check out trading. It's a game, not a job and it's certainly not RL where you have to play it safe. EVE has so much to offer to the players who "dare to be bold" and it's such a boring piece of shite if you stick to the known grinding nonsense.

Excellence is not a skill, it's an attitude.

Mining will start paying out now that the russians no longer have there bots or there drone poo.

Honestly I dont see how missions are any better then mining. Once you've run them all is just more active management in one and less in the other.

If you are going to continue mining FFS a corp, get yourself some orca bonuses, no reason not too.

Eve is not to meant to be played alone.

Mission running will make more money then ratting, but that will get bored for you to once you have it all worked out. Just make sure you join a good player corp. That will help with the whole..."Eve is getting boring again" thing.

You might loose **** in pvp but that tends to make people hang around eve the most ; )

I mine alone and with friends. I find it intensely relaxing. I would suggest you find a nice Corp of friendly and active people.

just wanted to thank you guys for the help. spent most of tonight running t1/t2 missions just trying to remember how everything works. I had a lot of fun... lost a few ships on some mission called "the blockade". I'm about 19 days from being able to pilot a hulk but will probably dabble in some other gameplay before going that route.

I'm very interested in joining a corp. open to suggestions for a newbie like myself with little direction.

IMHO, try everything. Buy some cheap pvp ships and fly out into lowsec. Flip a can. Jump into a wormhole. Find a trade route. Manufacture something. Do an Epic Arc. Talk to people you meet while doing these things. Shooting rocks is something you can do, but it's only one of hundreds of things you can do.

We did a few episodes of Srs Bzns that might be helpful: What to do in Eve and Corps & Ship Fitting for starters. Good luck.

Most people are focusing on your ability to mine which can always be an option in Eve. Your question is should you start a new toon? Generally that is a no in Eve unless you want to train toons simaltaniously to do things. With toons unless you never plan to undock there are central skills necessary to all ships that take time to retrain on new characters. Also if you have not already it is a good idea to find players who you have fun flying with and share common interests or goals.
Also if you ever have any questions feel free to pc me if I'm on or mail me don't mind answering questions or helping people.

Always willing to help all you have to do is ask, though if you're in the other fleet I may not help the way you want. Just a heads up. Pub Channel: Lost Souls Trading Post
