Hey Daniel.

The best recon about systems and its population is mostly a bit of work and experience. To answer your question:

INGAME: Map - Stars - Statistics

Jumps last hour.
Faction/Police ships killed.
Stations.
*Players docked active: This is not really very accurate, since the values are an "average" and not a snapshot.

repeat that in cycles of 3 hrs for at least 72 hrs, better would be about a week. Note that informations down in any way. I use excel for it and then get a nice diagram about IF and WHEN to be there.

OUT OF GAME:

Eve refinery, eve market. Check the stations there for prices and market activities. Note down key items and you can see in numbers how much activity is there.

If you need more precise informations some buying contracts for certain keyitems (not too foten avail, price like 5% off from trade hubs) also show how much activity is there really - and deliver a bit of profit if there is space left in your tummy :)

Some kind of information network is important. Know who are explorers (personal notes on toons) and have contacts to the miners there - they are mostly not travellingmuch but can provide activity reports or even tell you, that its very empty there. At least also u can place free account toons in certain key regions for you.

Seems like a lot of ppl have tried helping and you have been arsy wiv them. Thats not gonna really get many ppl helping you. Do a bit of work and stop looking for EVE easy mode.

I dont consider that as "..Eve in easy mode ..". By just knowing the basics it doesnt get easy - it starts to become more complicated and interesting when you know where to go and what to expect. The most interesting part still is what you do not know about that specific site you just pinned down and how to get further :)

just fyi: i asked because i was toying with the idea to build a traffic history database with the exact intent of discovering underpopulated systems, as in i press one button and get a table with all systems sorted by jumps in the last weeks, eventually months. in spite of me mentioning dotlan in the op, people kept proposing it and then Gorki Andropov found his ******** self posting here, which is usually the point where every thread goes to ****.

I should buy an Ishtar.
