Most RPGs have many forms of cover- i.e. something you can stand behind to protect you from enemy fire. But Eve doesn't even have terrain, since it takes place is space, so we could really use some kind of deployable cover. So here are a few ideas.

1. Smoke screen
Pop a smoke screen that lasts for a limited time and makes all ships within it's radius untargetable and unable to target or warp.

2. Blast Wall
Deploy a square blast wall that intercepts all turret fire and missiles from a specific direction and lasts until it's destroyed.

3. Force Field
Cast a square force field wall that last for a limited time and absorbs one of the four damage types.

No, that's all "arbitrary nonsense". We have ships which have stats, we have mods which give us capabilities. Just because other game use twitch based gameplay gimmicks doesn't mean EVE needs them.

Excellence is not a skill, it's an attitude.

Run a search on "LoS" (Line of Sight). There are problems with your "blast walls" idea.

"Smoke screen" = ECM, ECM Burst, and Sensor Dampeners

"Force Field" = Logistics pretty much does this for large ships that can field a decent tank (i.e. you ARE the "forcefield") and the way weapon tracking works allows you utilize different tactics to mitigate, if not completely avoid, damage.
