In Eve and other competitive video game environments, to an extent, hate groups are allowed. It is okay to have a group that attacks or maligns an entire class of people (such as hating miners, carebears, high-sec dwellers, etc.). It is okay to advocate and practice hatred, hostility, or violence towards members of a designated sector of the Eve society.

Within the Eve community, there is plenty of hate between competing groups, and this is how it should be. Faction warfare between the races in Eve is an attempt at embracing this. You just can't identify with “real life” hate groups:

Quote:
2. You may not use any abusive, defamatory, ethnically or racially offensive, harassing, harmful, hateful, obscene, offensive, sexually explicit, threatening or vulgar language. (Alternate spelling or partial masking of such words will be reprimanded in the same manner as the actual use of such words.)
3. You may not organize nor be a member of any corporation or group within EVE Online that is based on or advocates any anti-ethnic, anti-gay, anti-religious, racist, sexist or other hate-mongering philosophies
4. You may not use “role-playing” as an excuse to violate these rules. While EVE Online is a persistent world, fantasy role-playing game, the claim of role-playing is not an acceptable defense for anti-social behavior. Role-playing is encouraged, but not at the expense of other player. You may not create or participate in a corporation or group that habitually violates this policy.

http://community.eveonline.com/pnp/terms.asp

Sure there is the “…other hate-mongering philosophies” catch-all and that’s well and good, but as long as the hatred is directed at an in-game group for their in-game activities/associations it is allowed by CCP and tolerated, even admired, by the players. Notice that it is perfectly acceptable to “organize [or] be a member of any corporation or group within EVE Online that is based on or advocates any” anti-miner, anti-carebear, anti-highsec, anti-PVEr philosophies.

However, there is an important distinction to be made between someone who joins FW and someone who joins a gaming hate group. These groups do not just want to "win" against their chosen in-game enemy. Their targets are real people, not space pixels. Their intent is to drive as many non-members from the game as possible. Of course this goal, if achieved, is ultimately self-destructive. However, as it is unattainable, they can merrily pursue this goal with all of the energy, hatred, and vigor they can muster...all day, every day.

A person longing for an outlet for feelings of general hostility, violence, and aggression can play a FPS and find that outlet. A person longing to belong to a hate group can join one in Eve and find an outlet for that too. While the same is true for other MMORPGs, CCP’s liberal philosophy on this subject really makes this the best game for the “hate group” member wannabe. They can join an alliance and be allowed to spew hate toward any number of defined groups or even just “everyone but us” which is what hate groups are really all about anyway. “You are not us, and so we hate you.” Hate speech against in-game groups is allowed (and common) on forums, online radio interviews, in “local”, and even at official real-world gatherings of players.

A hate-group member wannabe can even join a group within the gaming community, or even the larger online community, to identify with. Once an accepted member of that group, they can then begin playing Eve as part of that group, and practice their group-centric hate on Eve to their heart’s content. While many popular MMORPGs reign them in a bit, they are delighted to find that CCP is much more tolerant of this type of hate, and so they tend to flock to Eve.

So, are you a member of a wannabe hate group? Are you getting the outlet you need? Do you feel that online hate groups lead to more or less real life hate group participation? Are gaming hate groups a good thing, or something awful?

I hate when posts ramble on and on before even hinting at their point. I lost interest.

I approve of the cat in a puppy-suit cross-post, however.

I don't judge people by their race, religion, color, size, age, gender, or ethnicity. I judge them by their grammar, spelling, syntax, punctuation, clarity of expression, and logical consistency.

This game thrives on hate.

But its only ingame

Otherwise Sausagefest would be full of ineffective men wandering around crying and trying to catch the first flight out.

After 2 hours there would be no one left

The SPLC is itself a hate group.

Hello Pot.

Hello Kettle.

Gee you look a little black today.

Quote:
In another Social Contract article entitled "Cooking the Books on Hate: A Closer Look at the SPLC’s Famous List," Steven Menzies quotes the SPLC’s chief hatchetwoman/propagandist, one Heidi Beirich, as saying that its list of "hate groups" is determined by vague "journalistic procedures." But when any group is placed on the list there is usually no specific information, no footnotes, and no fact checking is possible. "Mr. X of the YZ organization is said to have once associated with a dubious character with racist feelings" is the kind of statement that is used to "list" a "hate group."

The SPLC has become an extraordinarily wealthy organization, and its directors and employees profit very handsomely from it. Morris Dees long ago became a millionaire from this shady scam. Apparently, its main source of revenue is fundraising letters that are sent out to the least intelligent/most gullible liberals in America who actually believe the SPLC’s wild and unproven smears and respond by sending them a check. In a Social Contract article entitled "Bashing for Dollars: The SPLC’s Predatory Game," Brenda Walker writes that by 2005 the organization had an endowment of $174 million. "Very little of the hoard is spent on actual civil right work," writes Walker. "The major products are smear campaigns," which are essentially fundraising campaigns.

In an article entitled "The Church of Morris Dees" in the November 2000 issue of Harper's magazine Ken Silverstein noted that the SPLC spends such a high percentage of its revenue on salaries, perks, and fundraising that "The American Institute of Philanthropy gives the Center one of the worst rankings of any [nonprofit] group it monitors." That, I suppose, is how it was able to move into its new palatial headquarters building in Montgomery, Alabama that is known locally as the "Poverty Palace."

All of this is undoubtedly why leftist journalist Alexander Cockburn wrote in the New York Press in 2007 that "I've long regarded Morris Dees and his Southern Poverty Law Center as collectively one of the greatest frauds in American life. The reasons: a relentless fundraising machine devoted to terrifying mostly low-income contributors into unbolting ill-spared dollars year after year to an organization that now has an endowment of more than $100 million . . ." Amen, Brother Cockburn.

Does the OP push SPLC tripe for fun and profit or was this a requirement?

Op and his super serious ilk are the exact reason why such groups form and thrive. Good sir you are the meat and potatoes that are needed to make the magic and lulz happen. More than anything its about humor and getting away from the serious auspices of life. Your failure to see it and attempt to malign it just makes it better.

The advantage of a bad memory is that one can enjoy the same good things for the first time several times.

One will rarely err if extreme actions be ascribed to vanity, ordinary actions to habit, and mean actions to fear.
