HATE groups in EVE and online gaming

In Eve and other competitive video game environments, to an extent, hate groups are allowed. It is okay to have a group that attacks or maligns an entire class of people (such as hating miners, carebears, high-sec dwellers, etc.). It is okay to advocate and practice hatred, hostility, or violence towards members of a designated sector of the Eve society.

Within the Eve community, there is plenty of hate between competing groups, and this is how it should be. Faction warfare between the races in Eve is an attempt at embracing this. You just can't identify with “real life” hate groups:

Sure there is the “…other hate-mongering philosophies” catch-all and that’s well and good, but as long as the hatred is directed at an in-game group for their in-game activities/associations it is allowed by CCP and tolerated, even admired, by the players. Notice that it is perfectly acceptable to “organize [or] be a member of any corporation or group within EVE Online that is based on or advocates any” anti-miner, anti-carebear, anti-highsec, anti-PVEr philosophies.

However, there is an important distinction to be made between someone who joins FW and someone who joins a gaming hate group. These groups do not just want to "win" against their chosen in-game enemy. Their targets are real people, not space pixels. Their intent is to drive as many non-members from the game as possible. Of course this goal, if achieved, is ultimately self-destructive. However, as it is unattainable, they can merrily pursue this goal with all of the energy, hatred, and vigor they can muster...all day, every day.

A person longing for an outlet for feelings of general hostility, violence, and aggression can play a FPS and find that outlet. A person longing to belong to a hate group can join one in Eve and find an outlet for that too. While the same is true for other MMORPGs, CCP’s liberal philosophy on this subject really makes this the best game for the “hate group” member wannabe. They can join an alliance and be allowed to spew hate toward any number of defined groups or even just “everyone but us” which is what hate groups are really all about anyway. “You are not us, and so we hate you.” Hate speech against in-game groups is allowed (and common) on forums, online radio interviews, in “local”, and even at official real-world gatherings of players.

A hate-group member wannabe can even join a group within the gaming community, or even the larger online community, to identify with. Once an accepted member of that group, they can then begin playing Eve as part of that group, and practice their group-centric hate on Eve to their heart’s content. While many popular MMORPGs reign them in a bit, they are delighted to find that CCP is much more tolerant of this type of hate, and so they tend to flock to Eve.

So, are you a member of a wannabe hate group? Are you getting the outlet you need? Do you feel that online hate groups lead to more or less real life hate group participation? Are gaming hate groups a good thing, or something awful?

That, I suppose, is how it was able to move into its new palatial headquarters building in Montgomery, Alabama that is known locally as the "Poverty Palace."

All of this is undoubtedly why leftist journalist Alexander Cockburn wrote in the New York Press in 2007 that "I've long regarded Morris Dees and his Southern Poverty Law Center as collectively one of the greatest frauds in American life. The reasons: a relentless fundraising machine devoted to terrifying mostly low-income contributors into unbolting ill-spared dollars year after year to an organization that now has an endowment of more than $100 million . . ." Op and his super serious ilk are the exact reason why such groups form and thrive. Good sir you are the meat and potatoes that are needed to make the magic and lulz happen. More than anything its about humor and getting away from the serious auspices of life. Your failure to see it and attempt to malign it just makes it better.
