Having problems with scanning

*disclaimer* I have searched the forums but after a cursory scan I can't see a similar issue.

I am doing the tutorial missions where you are requested to find a magnetometric training site but I am having issues getting one to 100% signal strength.

My method is such (which, from what I read/watch, is pretty standard): Launch four probes, arrange in a vague pyramid and scan - I start at 4AU usually. When I find a magnetometric signature, I reduce the scan radius down incrementally, repositioning as I go, until I get to either 0.5 or 0.25AU. Usually, when I get to 0.5AU, I get a signal strength of around 90-99.9 percent (and the scan overview confirms it is a training site) then the signature disappears until I increase the scan radius back up to 1AU, when the signature reappears with around 60-70% strength.

I can't seem to work out why the site disappears just when I'm successful and to be frank, it is frustrating. I am enjoying the game so far (reminds me of a very flashy version of Elite - one of my favourite games of all time) and although not game breaking for me, it is making me question whether I would want to salvage in the future.

Can anyone shed some light on what I'm doing wrong or could do differently?

Are you decreasing ALL of the probes or just ONE?

The dot that appears is not guaranteed to be the actual location of the site.

Its a better tactic to reduce just one probe and position it dead center on the target.
Then find the widest probe, reduce it one step and put it dead center on the new target.
Repeat until site is found.

There is a fine line between a post and a signature.

I'm decreasing all 4, but I usually reposition all four to around the middle of the red sphere first, then overlap when the yellow indicator appears. I am finding the site, but just not to the signal strength needed. I will give your method a go as well, I need all the help I can get as firing curses at my computer when I fail is hardly dignified, even when I'm on my own in the house! Big smile

If you haven't watched it already: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=heYfTA00Idg

And I would suggest training to use a 5th probe.

When I probe, I use 4 probes on the same plane positioned in a X form where the center is usually on the spot of the signature (either the center of the sphere or the actual pin) with if needed a 5th probe in the center but in an above or below plane. This with some avg. probing skills will get me 95% of the sides scanned without a lot of effort (there are still a couple of really hard sites that I can't scan).

What also helps if you want to continue in probing is using the frigates which receive bonuses to probing. Each race has a T1 frigate and a T2 frigate (Covert Ops) that gives bonuses to probing. Another thing to consider if you want to continue in probing is using Sisters of Eve Probe launchers with Sisters of Eve Probes, these give another bonus to probing. Both together means you get a nice bonus to probing and should make it a bit easier.

This tells me your probes aren't communicating. One probe has a red sphere, two should have a red circle, three should have 2 red dots, and 4 should have one red dot. If you still have a reed sphere then you need more overlap on the probes.

The red sphere is usually where I start to overlap the probes more, which then leads to the red circle.

J'Poll - I will give the fifth probe a try as well, the more the merrier!

Like Xer said:

Red sphere = 1 probe in range of the signature.
Red circle = 2 probes
2 Red pins = 3 probes
1 Red pin = 4 probes.

Yellow pin = 4 probes + good percentage scanned to identify what kind of signature it is.
Green pin = win, you have 100% and can warp to it.

I've had the scan to the point where I've had a green pin at 99.6% (at a scan radius of 0.5AU) but then it's disappeared - I don't think it's the fact that I'm bad at scanning, I just think something is a bit fishy.

In generally use 6-7 probes in a star shaped pattern on one up, one down, 3-4 on sides and one in the middle.
Once you have launched the probes, just simply drag the probes while holding shift (moves the probe formation all at once) or alt (moves probes closer or farther from target while keeping their relative positions intact).
Once you have enough scan strength so that the dot *no longer* wonders around you simply drag all you probes dead center to it while decreasing scan range.

Finally managed it - did nothing really different to what I did before, so not sure what was up yesterday... Very strange!

Maybe bad luck. Scanning, besides skills (both real and ingame SP) also need a bit of luck. I have days where I scan sites within 1.5 minutes, there are days where it takes forever.

it also depends on positioning of your probes, some times just a little nudge is enough to get that 100% and sometimes that same nudge takes you from 99,9% to 70% Evil

You may be right, I'm having a similar issue finding a decent ladar site, but that's probably me now! Lol
