Why arent XL blasters terrible like the rest of them?

So I was looking at extra large blasters and I realised that the trait that makes blasters stand out from the rest, short range, is missing from XL blasters! There is barely any difference between xl blasters and pulse lasers!

Is it because of insane titan cost that those pilots shouldn't be bothered by any drawbacks?

I'm assuming it's because of two factors. Primary being that they would be useless against POSs without such range, because of the shield radius of POSs. Secondarily because using them in fleets would be even more problematic without the added range. Even minor accidental bumping would push them outside their optimal and they wouldn't have good ways to correct the situation. Basicly the reality of the game would make "proper" X-large blasters largely useless.

Quite probably because blasters are no longer terrible.

This.

CCP should add more NPC 0.0 space to open it up and liven things up: the Stepping Stones project.

Its because of the lack of T2 ammo.

The other.

But yeah, the whole POS shield radius thing, plus if they had conventional blaster range, they wouldn't be able to track well at optimal.

I think what the OP is saying is this.

T1 XL Guns /w Close Range Ammo.

XL Blasters 19 + 19
XL Pulse Laser 21 + 13
XL Auto Cannon 17 + 36

While Gun size follows a pretty consistent pattern of doubling.

T1 /w Close Range Ammo.

Medium Pulse Laser I - 3.1 + 2.5
Heavy Pulse Laser I - 6.3 + 5
Mega Pulse Laser I - 13 +10

Light Neutron Blaster I - 0.9 + 3.1
Limited Neutron Blaster I - 1.9 + 6.3
Neutron Blaster Cannon I - 3.8 + 13

They threw the Weapons Guidelines out of whack for Capitals otherwise Gallente and Minmater Short Range Weapons would suck compared to Amarr's Duel Giga Pulse I 21 +13 which is actually pretty close to the money on progression for the next rung down Duel Heavy Pulse I which is 11 + 7.5

They did it so they wouldn't suck in large fleet scenario's where caps are used like L Blasters and L Auto's.

Yeah this is exactly my point.
I dont get why XL blasters do not have short range while still having more dps than lasers or projecticles.

They used to follow the normal progression but, at the time, Moroses tended to be rail fit because the 8 (IIRC) km optimal made them absolutely useless for the Dreads' intended role (as stated above, due to the radius of a POS Shield).

The Moros' drone bonus allowed some ships to be used in ship to ship PvP where the blasters had a real effect but in the first of the siege rebalancing passes the dreads were refocussed to structure shooting - in order to make that viable for the Moros (and to a lesser degree the Nag) the Optimal ranges of the Blasters and ACs were increased.
