Good choice. Feel free to convo or eve-mail me if you have questions.

CCP should add more NPC 0.0 space to open it up and liven things up: the Stepping Stones project.

That is a much kinder name than most have for it. I like to think of it as a space whale, myself.

It really depends on where you're missioning at. Different rats have different resists and damage types, so pick a ship to match.

For example, the Abaddon is amazing against sansha and blood raider rats. Being an armor tanker, it has high natural resistance against EM and thermal damage, and deals TM/TH as well, which are the two biggest weaknesses for both of those pirate factions. However, against angel ships which deal(and are weak to) explosive and kinetic damage, it fails pretty hard

Another example, gallente ships are relatively easy to tank against kin/therm damage, and they deal that, so they're good against guristas and serpentis, but only mediocre against sansha and again, quite weak against angels

Shield ships have the opposite problem...great against angels, ok against guristas, still kind of ok against serp, a bit of fail against em/therm rats.

But the right skill set can overcome that nicely. The Maelstrom, for example, can be fitted with a monster tank against just about any particular NPC enemy using a damage control unit and the proper set of shield hardeners to go with a bonused active shield booster, as well as being able to throw all types of damage using artillery or autocannons. The only issue might be with the infamous bonus room of Angels Extravaganza, where you might end up having to dock up and swap out hardeners to take out the thermal cruise missile launchers.

Similar deal with the Domi and active armor hardeners - except that armor tankers don't have an active equivalent to the Adaptive Invulnerability Field active shield hardener (but then, shield tankers don't have a passive version like the Adaptive Nano energized and standard plates). Four active hardeners isn't an uncommon fit for the Domi. It's also got the advantage that it can be loaded with mission-specific drones to hit the weakensses of the NPC's you're being sent out to face, rather than being stuck with just one type of damage.
