Should you use different ammo for different distances or is changing ammo a waste of time and instead you should just move your ship?

For the most part, yes. The only exceptions are missiles which have no optimal range and lasers, who can switch ammo "instantly".

With projectiles and hybrids you should keep the ammo the same and adjust your ship position as necessary. The only time you should change ammunition for the sake of range is when you can't keep your range no matter how hard you try.

Well, with the new 5 second ammo swap, it is useful to swap ammo now with hybrid guns. I do it all of the time. It's really handy with rails.

Edit: I normally carry antimatter and tungsten in all ships, and the appropriate T2 ammo depending on rails or blasters.

Honestly, out of all of the changes they made to hybrids, this is one of the best.
