OK,

Both Sony games. Both seem fairly similar in concept.

How do they compare?

Has anyone here been able to see both or play both yet?

Who will end up cannibalizing a player base from who?

Planetside 2 = PC game

Dust = Console game

Personally unless the Dust integration with Eve is really amazing and Planetside 2 is pay to win I'll probably be playing PS2. Console controllers are impossible to aim with. There are plenty of games they're suited for. Fighting games, sports games and racing games come to mind. FPS, MMORPG and RTS games are just terrible on controllers though and Dust is 2 out of 3. Plus I want to wait and see how badly being on a PS3 will hinder further development post-launch.

DUST 514 does have mouse and keyboard support. Just plug in your USB peripherals, and you should be good to go!

Anyway, as similar as DUST 514 and Planetside 2 are, they're very different shooters.
Planetside 2 is all about huge shooty-shooty battles across several huge maps.
DUST 514 is more about planning your fits and tactics in conjunction with EVE players across thousands of medium-sized maps, for more meaningful territory control.

Also, DUST 514 has PVE and Planetside 2 doesn't. One's console exclusive, while the other is PC exclusive.

I wouldn't worry about competition between them, really. They could even benefit each other.

I'm tempted by planetside 2, but hesitant about playing another SOE game. They manage to ruin all they're games in the end.

In hindsight my post should have had more psssshhhh

Both are F2P as well. I played PS1 when it came out and for a few months after that. Was a lot of fun. The vids of this one make it look pretty good as well. Lots of modification of weapons, vechs.

Truth be told the training trees are quite similar. I just dont know how much modification you can do to individual systems in Dust... Looks more like you're going to add mods to your solider rather than say your weapons. (scopes, nad launchers, recoil adjustment)

PS will also not be instanced.

Planetside 2 = large-scale, never-ending, self-contained, strategic/operative/tactical gameplay with limited resource management.

Dust 514 = small-to-medium scale, match-based, transgaming, operative/tactical gameplay (strategic on the EVE level), with complex resource management.

You have to remember that even if Mouse+KB is slated for support your mouse speed is going to be locked to the scroll speed of the controller. This will make the mouse support about as effective as many of the aftermarket systems that do this already such as Eagle Eye and such.

What it means is mouse based play is counter-intuitive to any PC gamer, instead of being able to make twitch movements with relatively small actions you have to exaggerate your mouse movements and drag the mouse across the pad. It's like playing a FPS with your hand in a bowl of jello. If you try to play standard your small fast movements will result in the cursor hardly moving.

I suppose it will help for people who can't handle sticks but I would prefer the controller over a down syndrome mouse any day.

The advantage of a bad memory is that one can enjoy the same good things for the first time several times.

One will rarely err if extreme actions be ascribed to vanity, ordinary actions to habit, and mean actions to fear.

How man times do people have to tell you that CCP have explicitly confirmed that Dust will have KB&M support?

No blob isn't the same for FPS's for the most part. Rather a huge area in PS is being battled over with multiple objectives in the area... Towers, main base (more than one sometimes) , generators in the base, replicators in the base... Not like eve where blob is out to fight a blob at a POS or a gate. And you can also go around the blobs, or sometimes it's smaller scale as well.

You should try to play shooters with console controllers. Not nearly as hard as you think, just takes skill to win is all.

I remember playing Halo with a controller. Good times.

I played the original Planetside for not very long [trial or something] but it was great while I was there.
I think I will definitely get Planetside 2. Vanu FTW, death to the NC [and TR]!

PS2 may or may not be a good game. It certainly sounds more interesting than Dust 514 as stand-alone games. However, they're not stand-alone games. Dust 514 is linked to EVE and I prefer the way CCP works rather than SOE's.

I'll go with Dust 514.
