Capital Construction in W-Space

A buddy recently hooked me up with an industrial char that's got a ton of mining/manufacturing skills. I thought I'd use this guy to start working gathering resources and eventually building some capital ships in our wormhole. I got a couple of questions as I'm thinking of getting started.

What type of assembly is needed to manufacture capital ship components? Is it a Component Assembly Array I'm looking for?

Looking at the vast amount of components needed there's about three freighters worth of components to ship to the WH if I were to build/buy the components in empire space (assuming I'm building a dreadnaught). Does this seem like a feasible plan or is it better to build the components in w-space?

Any other pointers on capital construction in general or cap construction in w-space in particular?

That's the one for components, yes. The Capital Ships themselves require a Extra Large Ship Assembly Array.

Well since your building Caps inside the wormhole, this leads me to believe that your wormhole's entrances cannot support the mass of a cap, so you probably couldn't get a freighter in there either. (Just my speculation based on the information given)

No matter what you do, your going to need blueprints, naturally =)
I'd reccomend Blueprint Copy packs, as the original Blueprints for cap ships and their components are quite expensive.

As far as the actual cap construction part is concerned, you have 2 options:

Get the components off the market and build it that way (only would need the hull BPC with this)
or
Mine the minerals yourself and build the components yourself (would need an entire pack for this)

Either way, it's gonna take some logistical wizardry on your part. Mining the minerals yourself being more logistically involved since you have to either refine the ore yourself in the WH or ship the ore to a station, refine, then back into the WH.

I can confirm it takes a good afternoon of 5 guys running itty 5's, bustards, and mammoths to get the hundred or so capital components for a simple carrier into a wormhole. Might I recommend an orca.

Orca's will fit into Class 3's and above, far as I know.

Also, before you build a ship you can never get out, be sure you need it and that you know what you're doing. I have to question why you think you need a dreadnought as your first capital. Seems to me a carrier would be more useful in most cases.

And, if you've never flown either before, I wouldn't recommend your first one being a wormhole ship. Fly it around empire a bit first to get the hang of how they work. You can always sell it again if you don't like it, but once you build one in a wormhole you're stuck with it (or the meagre base insurance payout if you self-destruct it)

Build the Comps inside, it's far less volume and far cheaper. There are BPC 'packs' on contract with varying ME/PE values. Components build relatively quickly compared to the actual ship.

IIRC its 11-12 orca loads (11.7M units) of trit alone for something like a rorqual, 8 (i think) for a carrier etc. The higher end minerals you can mine for quite quickly and save a bunch on, Megacyte / Zydrine etc. It's just the sheer quantity of trit that fucks you, and pyerite too. It's never worth your time to mine the low ends in a WH.

IMO if you can fly one build a carrier first, far more useful than a dread.

Don't think like some of the other posters do, a trapped capital isn't a writeoff in terms of ISK, it's an investment in a force multiplier. When faced with the average fleet of roaming tards (T3/BC/BS) it's a significant advantage. POS got seiged? Well fuckos meet my pair of triage carriers, I'll have this thing back up to 100% before the stront runs out easily.

By far the easiest way to get a capital into a wormhole is to jump them into a C5/C6. This is also the only way you will ever get them out again.

I've built a Rorqual in a C2 (and self-destructed it when I left) from minerals and BPC. I've also helped to build a dread and a carrier (these were destroyed) via importing capital parts. By far the fastest and easiest was the parts method.

1. Load parts into freighters.
2. AFK freighters and Orcas to hisec wormhole.
3. Load the parts into Orcas at a NPC station, and move the Orca into the wormhole.
4. When the wormhole pops (8 Orca passings for a C2), find another hisec wormhole and repeat from step 2 until done.

If you want to shove more mineral onto your hauler or Orca, you can fit more minerals if they were loaded into a container and then the same container is loaded onto the ship compared to just the minerals loaded onto the ship.

Could someone who's done this in a wormhole, how long does it usually take to get all of the components together and complete it? Also, did you find it worth it?

From memory it took us about a week from minerals to fully built archon using BPC's, component assembelly array and x-large ship assembelly array.

The usefullness depends on how many people can fly the ship and what times there on, as well as if your willing to have more than just yourself flying it.

it's all very well having a shiny carrier for defence 'if' your online / reachable when the wh is invaded.

I started a rorq on the 23rd Aug and had the ship pop out on the 13th Sept. I'm pretty sure the comp array sat idle for at least a day during that time.

Hehe. I'd love to see that, myself, since you cannot target anything inside the FF, including the tower, while the stront is running. And unless you leave your pair of triage carriers out, providing the probable REASON for the POS bash, you won't be getting them out of the their SMA's until those shields regen to 50%, which won't happen until AFTER the Strontium period is over. Let me know how that works out for ya, please. Blink

Someone gets it.

Just make sure you keep them locked down, it's a huge investment to leave in an unlocked hanger for someone in your corp to steal for the fun.

Personally, I trucked in my minerals and built a carrier and a rorq in a c3. I used fully expanded Iteron 5's to get my minerals in. With one comp assembly array I didn't have to have all the mins in at one time, so I was able to use the coming and going of various low sec, Hi sec and c2 exits to my advantage.

Don't forget the equipment assembly array for your mods ( cap mods take a bit of minerals themselves ) and a Small ship assembly array if you plan on equipping a carrier with fighters.

I was able to get my isk investment plus a little bit of profit back when I sold the c3 with both caps.

You can online SMA and access them, as they don't use CPU. Same for turrets.

Oh please.

Also is why you keep your triage mods and triage stront in a hauler in the SMA, and not in a corp hangar array.

I second and third this. We had a pissed off Corp member eject and trash a bunch of ships from an SMA in our wormhole, but thankfully our cap fleet was locked up behind a passworded POS that only us directors could access. Losing a couple orcas and cruisers is bad enough.

Security aside, I have to agree that the Caps in a c2/3 are a great deterrent to some Sunday funday fleet deciding to try and take down your POS. Well worth the investment.
