I've decided I really want to peruse building Mining Barges. Any suggestions skill wise or what I'll need to start doing this?

A BPO or BPCs ... and minerals ... and somewhere you can build them (station or POS with a assembly array).

Why did you choose this? Are they particularly profitable? Based on what you're asking I don't think you've done a lot of research so I have no idea why you'd choose to limit yourself so severely.

Skills needed:

  • Production Efficiency (For manufacturing)
  • Metallurgy V (for ME research)
  • Research V (for PE research)
  • Science V (For copies)
  • Mechanics V (invention, manufacturing).
  • Various invention / manufacturing skills needed for invention, hulk, mackinaw. Not going to list these as they are on the blueprints (search market for them).
  • Various market skills (to decrease tax and broker costs).


Covetor

  1. BPO will cost around 2.2 billion (unless you make the trip though null to buy one, not worth it).
  2. You'll have to research the ME and PE which will take 60 days at a POS roughly for ME 28 / PE 28. In an NPC station add 20 days to ME wait time.
  3. To research BPC's it will take 50 hours per BPC (14 BPC runs within the 30 day limit). These will be used to make hulks. Assuming a 25% chance at inventing this will make 3.5 bpc's.
  4. Invention takes 1 day each BPC (assume 3 days).


BPC will allow you to make Hulks.

Retriever

adding to that:

t2 production is only viable if you make the components as well (in general). So you would need (multiple) BPO's for that part as well. And acquiring the component on a small scale can be an hassle.

So as in theory this could reap decent profits, it's also the most time consuming.

If I had to guess hulkagedoon. Would be a good time for someone to start selling these ships, though personally I work off of BPCs for now personally I just don't see these ships selling much after this.

I agree with Hulkageddon prices are up so worth it now for sure....howsoever in general there has always been a strong demand for hulks long term

In ( i think) the last Quarterly economic report ccp published ( q3 2010?) the hulk was listed as the most popular ship in eve ahead of the drake.

Im sure things have changed since then and in fact my guess is Titans are the most popular ship atm with Moms second...but stil not bad for sales.

Thats not to say they are PROFITABLE ...it can get cutthroat with it costing u 230 m to make and prices selling at 235million ...esp due to cost of invention for most of us for BPC when someone with t2 BPO can undercut us...admittedly after paying billions for BPO but still hurting our prices and thus profit..

Of current note....getting into Hulk building now is very tuff as everyone is doing it and prices are thru thru roof form some things like nanotransisters...

another fyi...find a station with empty manufacturing slots...cause while u can build at POS in Adv Med Ship array there is penalty on ME which will hurt ur profits.

The current profit on a Covetor in Jita is 784,837.70 with my broker discounts. There is a trade volume of about 75 per day.

I'm not sure I'd be willing to hold onto a 2b ISK BPO for those. No idea on Hulks though.

First step to Industry: Get your Skill "Excel use" up, followed by "Profit calculation", followed by "Setup logistics". Just building Ships is easy ;)
