Hi, I just got Eve and I'm on trial account, I'm wondering if you can have a character that does more than one thing?

For example I'd like to get into trading, mining, smuggling, all the good economic stuff and not be limited to one area. And I mean as a loan ship not a corporation. Think Han Solo on steroids.

Is this possible with the game?

So much so it's almost to a fault. All characters of all races and bloodlines ect can train every skill in the game and use them equally well. The tricky bit is deciding in what order and what value you place on the importance of having each skill.

Most people however would suggest to specialize so that you can get good at something instead of ending up as a jack of all trade, master of none, if you take your time to master an activity fairly well before moving on you can end up as a jack of all trades and still master them.

If you haven't already realised, the tutorials take you through the different things EVE has to offer. If you complete all the tutorials you will be given a) valuable information b) some skill books c) some starter ISK d) some rookie ships.

Once you've completed them you may decide you like one thing over another and you can skill that one up a bit more. Every time you want to buy a new ship or a piece of equipment for a ship you will need to meet the prerequisites for using it. This means for awhile you will have to train up lots of different skills to get the best use out of it.

I'd suggest it's as easy as setting an initial goal you want to attain. For example, 'I think ship "X" is cool and I want to fly it'. Once you have the skills to do that, you can set your next goal which might be 'I want to be a mining magnate'. Once again you will need to inject skills (like mining barge and mining lasers). Once you are proficient at that, you guessed it, it's time to choose a new goal. Some people will decide they love one area of EVE and will concentrate on getting the related skills to Level Five, while others will decide that all they need is the basic ones cos they can come back later if they want to expand on it. Either way of playing is fine

Enjoy

Skill-wise it's quite possible to do just about everything decently, as long as you realise that specialists will out-perform you in almost every way until you catch up in their specific areas.

The thing this takes, however, is a lot of time. Easily 2-3 years in training time to do most stuff and be good at it. Even then there'll be gaps.

The other reason you will need just about that much time is the simple issue of trust, which is rare in this game, very hard to earn, and very easy to lose.

As for "Han Solo on steroids" .... If they ever fix the bounty system I'll happily toss a couple of mil on your head to complete the... experience.. of having half the universe chase after you to hand over your frozen corpse to the highest bidder. P

Highsec isn't "Safe".  Neither is it a playground for bullies and bottomfeeders. So stop complaining and start playing the game already.

Yes that is very possible. You are looking at about 5 years of skill time. There are a few things that you can't do even after 10 years of skill time, if it would be sensible to even try to get there is a different question.

You will need more then one ship tho. Any ship is good at one thing, maybe two. Very few ships are good at three things. A group of players will be more efficient by a mile, no matter what you do.

Welcome aboard Dalmos.

As others have said, it's possible almost to a fault :) Any character can do everything in the game - just needs time.

Just a note - smuggling in this game is not "carry narcotics", but more often than not it is getting minerals and weapons and ships between high and null sec. Personally I love smuggling. Start of small with trading in high sec to get a feel of what sells, then try scouting the markets.

Smuggler in eve = trader with people trying to shoot you more :)

There is only one thing that you will need in New Eden, and that is time. It is a precious commodity, not to be squandered, but with it, you can do anything.

Quick, cheap trills are that way --->

As posted before, it is possible.

But keep in mind, by being able to do all kinds of things you will become a jack-of-all-trades but master of none.

Of course the flip side of that is over specialization leaves you extremely vulnerable to one well placed strike from the Nerf Bat.
If you skill up for something overpowered and it gets nerfed into oblivion, you are out of luck for a couple of months till you skill up or get buffed.

Still alot of skills are useful across a variety of situations, so you are never completely screwed.

Yes Daimos, you *can* do everything and technically, nothing prevents anyone from doing anything. As others stressed heavily, too much diversification leads to average results while specialization leads to optimal results over the same timeframe, but don't let them freak you out.

As a new player, you certainly don't know enough about the game to have your mind settled on what may entertain you in game, and the only way of knowing, will be through trial and errors.

Everyone makes mistakes in the beginning and trains stuff they later don't find *that* interesting, then they try other things and move on.
At some point, you might end up with your mind settled on something and you can either focus on it then with all the other skills you had already, whether you keep skilling those along or not, is up to you.
But you could also decide to create an alt, specialized in that specific activity, after experimenting on your first char, you will have figured most of what's needed to make it efficient.

A lot of players maintain several characters, with various "professions", often carrying around their first toon, serving as a sketch book or something.

Vets are very likely to have old toons that can perform very well in multiple domains, but we're talking about multiple years of skill training.

I'd say, create multiple trial accounts to experiement before you decide with your main, but don't be afraid of training skills, just keep in mind the more skills you train, the longer it'll take to maximize them all.

Because you lost some time trying things before you settle, doesn't mean you can never reach a good level, only it'll take longer.
