Hello,

How profitable is it to own a Jump freighter and what kind of capital do you think I should have after investing in this ship? Do msot of you JF pilots make your isk through importing? Thank you in advance.

A JF is smaller but faster than a freighter, and nigh-uncatchable if used right. As such, there are some prerequisites you should consider to getting one:

  • Do you really need it? Do you need to supply large amounts of stuff (more than a carrier or a BR can do) from hisec to deep lowsec or nullsec?
  • If you are trading, do you have a plan, and the ISK to back up that plan? The amount of capital necessary depends on what you want to sell. If you want to flood lowsec with Rifters, you don't need a lot of capital. If you want to sell Vindicators in nullsec, you do.
  • Do you have a cyno chain and associated support? Either with your own alts or with trustworthy players, you need 1 or more cynos to get anywhere. Keep that in mind.
  • Can you keep it safe? JFs are very useful for lowsec and nullsec, but they are also very vulnerable. Do you have a way of keeping a JF safe?
  • Can you afford to lose it? "Don't fly what you can't afford to lose" is a tenet of Eve.

It wasn't profitable to run the JF for importing goods to low sec. It would probably be profitable to run if you had a large alliance that needed logistics support. I hear that JF pilots get paid by alliances though I never got paid by mine at the time. The best use I found was using it to transport goods to and from my WH with a low sec static and for hauling Moon Goo from Solitude.

Also, its generally a good idea to use the JF to haul in low/null sec and a regular freighter in high sec. The risk of someone suicide ganking you just for the expensive killmail is too high, IMO. I had a cyno alt on standby any time I needed to run my JF through high sec, and I didn't hesitate to cyno out instead of jumping through a suspicious gate.

Don't the big alliances just titan-bridge a whole bunch of normal freighters instead of JF?

Last time I had anything to do with alliance level logistics: no. The really massive alliances only broke out the titan chains for really big freighter movements. That could be different now with how fast titans are **** out these days.

I got mine for ease of moving my own stuff, with no intention of making a profit. I used it to haul a few billion worth of T2 mods down to 0.0, sold those, hauled lots of Drone Alloys back to highsec for sale, and eventually made enough that I was at the break-even point. But I wouldn't get it thinking that you are going to make a huge profit by having the ship. It is mostly just wonderfully convenient. If you already have all the cyno alts and everything, it makes Nullsec logistics relatively easy.

CCP should add more NPC 0.0 space to open it up and liven things up: the Stepping Stones project.

It all really depends on what you intend to use it for. For profit, I haven't really used it that much. You also have to compete with entitys like black frog, and most people don't want to pay 40 mil/load but its really not worth your time for anything less if you're out to make a profit (you could mission and probably make more isk/hour). I use my JF for convenience and I'd say it was worth the 5.6 bil for that purpose alone.
