CCP: Are Goonswarm 'Really' a good place for new players to learn EvE?

Hey CCP

On your Wiki, and linked from the new launcher (On Mac clients at least) listed top and prominently is this link:

Called: Player Organizations
Helpful corps in game

Which leads here:

http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Educational_organizations

Listed on this page are Goonswarm.

Now, I love Goons for what they add to the drama that is EvE. Can't wait for Jita to kick off shortly! But I am pretty sure, they are NOT the place to send brand new players looking to learn EvE. What they will learn, is how to be scammed, shot, laughed at, mocked etc.

This is official goon policy. Indeed to quote Goon's themselves on their own wiki:

GoonWaffe is NOT a publicly recruiting corporation. We are all members of the Something Awful forums, or well-known friends of someone who is a member. To join GoonWaffe you MUST either be a member of the Something Awful forums and have been an active member for at least 3 months, or you must have a sponsor who is a GoonWaffe member of good standing who is willing to vouch for you, meets the above requirement, and has been a member of GoonWaffe for 30 days. If you do not meet the above requirements then you can not join.

Can we please have Goonswarm removed from this wiki page, so that maybe you get more people playing EvE past trial :)

Thanks

Moon

haha,

Greetings new players.

To get started and up to speed, buy a plex and pay the subscription fee of 500mill ISK.
Then contract all your ships to Goonswarm so we can transport them safely to 0.0

Best regards,
Goonswarm

Very helpful. They teach new players not to trust anyone, to double check everything, to watch what is happening around them and that EVE is a place where player characters can do some really, really nasty things.

You have to be kidding me. Now you know why we keep computer programmers locked in the basement with no sharp objects. Advise new players to learn from the Goons. Why don't they just say, "Sell all your gear and give all your money to the first Goon you see"? I've heard dumb things before, but this one soars to the top five. Let a Goon teach you.

Let John Wayne Gacy babysit for you.

Yeah, as helpful as bunny hunting with **** Cheney is to learning gun safety.

(Can you believe they censored the former Vice President's first name...just taking care of us in their "own" way...)

there is a line: "As mentioned before, however, recruitment is only open no questions asked to new pilots who are SomethingAwful members: existing pilots need to find a sponsor who will vouch for them."

You mean just below this bit...

Join Goonswarm today: learn how to survive and thrive in 0.0, even if you are a day-old newbie or a years-old player who has never ventured out of highsec. You will, of course, die a lot. It's part of learning 0.0. Goonswarm's vast newbie support system and ship reimbursement however will ensure this is a learning experience

LOL I love the fact Goons have hijacked the wiki like this. I'm sure there will be many laughs had.

By the way, by 'find a sponsor' what this means is... find somebody who will enjoy scamming you. ;-)

Sponsorship is meant for people who have (real life) friends who are members of Goonswarm, want to join Goonswarm but are not members of Something Awful themselves. If they screw up, both they and the sponsor gets booted. That's why you don't get randomly sponsored in and why all random sponsor offers are scams.

These are actually very valuable lessons in EVE. Ofc if you want to avoid this happening with you in future.

After training session with goon recruiters you will learn to be careful and not to trust people easily.

FYP, [tongue in cheek] welcome to Eve [/tongue in cheek]

well the mocked & laughed at bit is currently right since Mittens derped, but that'll blow over when Goons either fail or manage to burn Jita.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Actually you can get accepted to GS faster if you have a sponsor, look at their official recruitment page.

But yes, they will scam you if you don't follow the official procedure, of which a step by step guide is laid out extremely clearly in their wiki. I can see why they wouldn't want any members who were this gullible/ignorant.

People who join this game aren't all aware of the fact that a large part of your survival depends on metagaming and outgame research.
So by making a false claim by CCP as GSF being a good source to learn the game without emphasising the whole thing one could also claim that CCP is running part of GSF's recruitement scams and thus diminishing other people's gamingexperience to boost other people's ingame income.

Interesting thing for Internal Affairs to look at.

This game is not for everyone. If it would be for everyone, it's name would be World Of Spaceships, but this is actually EVE-Online, isn't it? Bear
