It seem insane to me that the Megathron has to sacrifice gank for tank. It is clearly a gank ship, meant for pvp and therefore dps. But apparently the megathron can't do what it does well because I need to fit 1600mm plates in the lows or else it dies before the job is done.

Clearly, the mega is a pvp ship. So why do I have to sacrifice damage output for it to do well in that role? It seems to me that the mega needs a massive HP increase so I no longer have to split the ship's fitting between tank and gank. That way it can finally perform its game role well.

Does that seem stupid to you? If so, you should also feel stupid about your Hulk argument.

The Hulk is a mining ship. That does not mean that it should be able to get away with fitting nothing but mining stuff! In the same way I can't have an effective mega with a pure DPS fit you can't expect to have an effective (survivable) hulk with a pure mining fit.

Fit tank and sacrafice some mining and you'll feel better. I, as a hi sec ganker, always avoid ganking properly tanked hulks because it isn't very economical. I'll just find some noob who has decided to go for max mining and take them out instead.

Think of it this way, would you argue a drake should get a massive HP boost so it can forgo shield tanking modules and fit nothing but scrams and webs in the mids? I don't think so.

Speaking of my favorite ship, I saw a Megathron mining in a HS belt today...WTF?
