Why?

Why not? Some savvy offices block EVE Gate, rendering out-of-game communication difficult. Spacebook allows another avenue of communication in these cases.

FAQ

Here's a list of questions I've been asked in the beta:

What do I need to sign up?

An e-mail address and your character name. The e-mail is for verification purposes only, and will be removed when API support is in. All e-mail addresses WILL be deleted from the database when not required anymore to comply with local law.

How secure are alliance/corp communications?

Extremely secure! Even I can't read them. Just set the privacy settings how you want them, and presto. Only people you want can see. Same with friends / friends of friends - you can even make things visible to some friends and not to others!

What kind of things can developers do?

Anything the API allows you to. Want to make an asteroids clone? Go for it! Want to make a mail reader because ours sucks? Go for it! Want to make a market price checker? Go for it! Want to make Pong? Go for it! Want to make a farmville clone? I'll hate you forever!

Isn't this basically Eve gate? Pretty darn sure everything you just listed can be done in Eve gate and is not a blantent copyright violation.
