I was looking to scan an orca down so set a filter just for that, but the i got about 20 hits with unique signatures. There was only one orca in the system.

What am i missing?

Filters will not work until you hit at least 25% sig resolution (turns yellow) iirc.

tbh I don't normally set filters for a specific ship size. Instead, if I'm hunting a specific target I will narrow their location down first using directional scan, then use my combats. If I did everything correctly, it should be a one time scan (especially with an orca).

That's good to know, thanks for the info.

I'll try your way out, it sounds like the better option.

Scanning filters are pretty much useless in any more depth than general category (such as 'ships', 'sigs', 'structures' ect) since you need to get results down to 25% before they kick in and at that point you can tell what's what from your results anyway.

You should be using d-scan to pinpoint the general area of the orca first, then try combat probing him. This will reduce the amount of noise you get from other ships in range of your probes.

Another pointer is that, lets assume your orca was at a grav, then all cosmic signatures (gravs, etc) spawn within 8 AU of a planet (and 75% or so within 4AU). So you should set your probes in a box at 8AU and go planet by planet.

A combination of d-can and selected probing method will result in you getting the probes onto the orca efficiently.
