A tale of honesty.

This is not going to be some drama posted in the wrong forum. I just thought I would share this with the rest of the community.

So I played this game back in 2004-2005 (I think) but then quit because I had no time to play it anymore and I got bored with it. I've never actually abandoned my interest for the game though and often looked at the influence map of alliances holding 0.0 space.

This week I decided to return again. My return has to do with Freelancer. A great space-combat game which had its flaws, but it still is very fun to play. I picked it up, and that caused me to resparkle my interest in EvE. So I came back earlier this week as a complete nooby to all the new stuff that has been added over the past years. One of the things is contracts.

I've acquired a small amount of 3 million ISK since my new start and I'm happy with it. I decided to try out the courier contracts and saw that I could take on several from a single person that needed shipments done from nearby systems to a central one. So I took all of them knowing my small industrial could do the job. Looking through the list of shipments to be done, I noticed one with the total cargo size of 8k cubic meters.

"That doesn't fit in my ship! Damn, there's no way I can get that to its destination". So I failed the contract right away. I didn't like it, but that's just the way it is. I wasn't careful enough with each individual shipment. So I did all the other shipments for the person and once I finished, I noticed to my horror that all the items of that failed courier contract were still waiting to be picked up (a few shuttles, a frigate and some ammo; nothing major, just too large as one package). "Aaaah, that's not mine!" Sure, he got the collateral, but even that was not that high (80k ISK) , so he had financial compensation, but I felt bad about keeping it. It's not my property, collateral paid or no. So luckily I found him online and willingly paid the 1 million ISK to engage in a private conversation (why is it so high anyways?)

I explained why I contacted him and asked him how he wanted the items back as I had no valid reason to keep them. He responded with that he didn't want them back. I could keep all the items and he even gave me a tip. The tip was a "small" amount of $400 million ISK. Reason for payment: honesty. "What the.. I don't need that, I want to return items to you, not keep the items and get $400 million to boot".

He replied with that he was likely going to quit EvE soon and he found that it would be more use to me than collecting dust on his account. He also said that it is very rare that honesty can still be found among its players and wished me all the fun with the items and ISK. Of course I thanked him for it, but it still feels a bit odd. My own stupidity is rewarded in a way. Not my honesty, because that is just how I am. I do not seek a reward for simply being honest. I know I will likely end up as a long-time member of this game now that it has more things that I like to do than back in 2004-2005, but the first week of my return in EvE has been an odd one for me, that's for sure.

I hope I can pay it forward to others some day. We'll see. Smile

Good work. It's much easier to be dishonest than honest in this game.

There are many in this game who go out of their way to make someone have a really bad day... it's good to hear you ran into that rare individual who is the polar opposite of those kinds of people. (edit - and happen to be one yourself)

Don't be surprised if the the next person that has a chance to screws you royally then laughs in your face about it.

It's not that rare.

Its not rare, its just fleeting. The second it turns very advantageous: *yoik*
...or just semi-advantageous
...or kinda advantageous
...or it had the illusion of being advantageous
...or if it would be very funny

I don't want to spoil the story, and I do know that there are a lot of players who can give 400 mil ISK tips like that, but ....

... there is small risk in such gifts. If he earned that ISK with botting or buying it illegally, there is a chance that GM might come and take it away from your wallet someday (possibly leaving your wallet negative if you already spent it.)

Just something to be aware of when receiving big gifts.

EDITS:

- You can fit 8k into industrial. Check module "Expanded Cargohold I" and rig "Medium Cargohold Optimization I".
- 1 mil ISK is max amount starting conversation can cost. Each player can decide how much they want it to cost from 0 to 1 mil. Default is about 2500 ISK.

I've been trying to find them for ages, I hear they make the best marks for scams.

There are plenty of good people in Eve, mor than bad people in fact but the bad people get all the press, making it seem as if Eve is a dark and horrbile place full of murder, theft and backstabbing. To be honest finding decent people is not hard, but you must persevere and not allow the bad ones to put you off teh game first. Alot of folks going to disagree, but Ive met far more decent people than bad ones.

Trust me, I almost know what I'm doing.

Unfortunately for you, being honest does not necessarily prevent a person from realizing that not everyone else is. Smile

Further to this, dont mistake in game villains for bad people, my corp for instance used to be lowsec pirates, there is very little we wouldnt do that was bad. However we always kept our word, never dishonoured a ransom, never griefed, never smacked in local except when someone went over the top insulting us and we have always been a very very social and friendly corp. Remember bad in game doesnt mean bad out of game.

Trust me, I almost know what I'm doing.

There are a lot of cool people in EvE, the human failures orbiting these forums are the exception not the norm.

I have been taught so many good things and met so many cool guys I won't ever forget in my 3.5 years of EvE.

I am trying to do like them and give back the favors but the more I do it, the more I get back again.

That's the nature of Good Karma or whatever you call it.

Happy Easter to everyone! Big smile
