So after clearing a low sec angel mag site, I brought back a salvager and salvaged the cans at the site, looting them in the process. Afterwards I tried to analyze them, and got an error message saying that I could not activate my analyzer on the cargo can because it was the wrong type of item or some such. Whats the problem here?

because it was a salvage site, and you already salvaged the cans. Do you want to have double or tripple reward from cans?

So I can either salvage it or analyze it? What generally gives better returns?

No, you can't choose. It will either be a salvaging or analyzing site. might be hacking site, tho I think those are called radar sites.
once you initiate warp to that site you usualy get a pop up message window, and you can see icon there what module you'll need for that site. That's if you're too lazy to find description in web.

Some cans you salvage, some you analyze and some you hack.

This is a good indication for what modules you need, however there are sites that say you need an analyzer, but in fact you will need both analyzer and salvager or even only a salvager. If you plan on doing magnetometric sites it is a good idea to fit both modules.

This help?

Cosmic signature type:
Radar *also called "hacking site" by players
Module required:
codebreaker

Cosmic signature type:

Magnetometric *also called "salvage site" by players
Module required:
Salvager
Analyzer

You'll sometimes find magnetometric sites that require both a salvager and analyzer. This is because some cans might require an analyzer and some might require a salvager. Never does a single can require both the salvager and analyzer to open.

Some mag. sites only require salvager
Some mag. sites only require analyzer

After you start running many mag. sites you'll gain a more clear understanding of the exploration mechanics

This is why the magnetometric sites are called "arch/salv sites" and the radar sites "hacking sites".
