Suggestions for PVE combat lvl 2 1/2

So, I've reached a point in my training and fittings that lvl 2 missions are snoringly easy to complete, but I'm pretty sure I'm not ready for lvl 3's yet as I'm still in a cruiser and don't have the skills for the next step up.

What other PVE combat activities can I do that might be a step between lvl 2 and lvl 3 missions for difficulty and reward?

Take a look at exploration. Generally in hi-sec the fights won't be difficult if you are running 2's, but you can get some escalations that are tougher. It can be a refreshing PVE alternative.
