i'm about 2 days away training wise from a being able to fly minmatar BC's, about 4 or 5 days from amar..... only have like 650k sp all spent into gunnery, mechanics, engineering, targeting etc. basically anything that pertains to ship piloting. what do you guys recommend i do once i get the standing to do lvl 3 missions? jump into a bc and start grinding away? am i too new to be able to pilot a BC well and solo level 3s? amarr or minmatar?

Without knowing who you run missions for... yeah I'd say an Autocannon fitted Hurricane. Selectable ammo type, lends itself well to shield tank, good vs frigate rats.

Hi,

I recommend that you stay along the Minmatar course for now, and fly a Hurricaine. A very versatile ship that can be fitted armour or shield tanked. Autocannons use no cap, are very accurate, and have good damage type selection.

If you decide to fly Ammarian ships - then the Harbinger is also a very good choice, but has drawbacks. Laser turrets are only capable of doing EM (and to a lesser extent - Thermal damage) which will reduce your damage considerably against some ships you will come across in missions.

I also recommend, that once you are in BC sized ships - you stay there for a good number of months to hone your skills to fly them better. Nothing in this game trumps skills - and advancing too quickly to Battleship will not be beneficial at all. Bigger is not always better! You have probably advanced to BC's too quick to be honest, but they are probably the most versatile ship class for PvE, so not such a bad thing.

Also, to answer another of your questions - a BC is probably the best chip class to solo L3 missions in. Just make sure you improve necessary skills - quick!

Have fun!

Since you are lacking drone skills, skill in general...

Buy a Cyclone,
fit 5x Artillery, 3x Assault launcher against frigs (not Heavy Assault)

and...
fly Level 2 Missions!

A Cyclone is cheaper to replace and more versatile then the Hurricane for low skill point.

For level 3 Missions, I recommend Tech 2 Drones, better shield skills and guns.

this. for level 3 missions, you should be able to use Hobgoblin II or some other T2 drones as well as Adaptive Invulnerability Field II, as well as have most gunnery skills up to at least level 3 (better 4). as a rule of tumb, i would advise you to have at least about 3mil skill points in the right places before you start with level 3s.

I should buy an Ishtar.

At the stage in your EVE career that you're currently at, I'd highly recommend the good ship Friendship :)

Thanks for the replies! Right now I'm doing level 2 missions in a passive shield tanked arty fitted rupture and just blowing thru them very easily. Only reason I was looking for lvl 3 missions was for a bit more challenge. Does the difficulty ramp up that much going from lvl 2 to 3?

not per se. some lvl3s are doable in a rupture but for most of them, you will need a more beefy tank than the one a cruiser can offer. you also really want good drone dps, especially in a ship with artillery.
edit: you can accept one or two easier lvl3s and try it out. just be sure to read up on them on eve-survival.com so that you know what to do.

I should buy an Ishtar.

Level 3s doable in a Rupture? If you have a good deal of sp, not a new character. You can't beat having 6 bonused guns slots and 2 launchers over what a rupture provides you. More importantly, the much beefier hp of a BC is something a new character will be thankful for in a level 3.

I suggest an arty cane. You can kill frigs at range, and as the heavier ships close on you you can switch to higher damage closer range ammo. Kiting is quite doable with an afterburner. If any frigs do get inside your tracking you can kill them fine with your launchers and drones. Train drone skills to use tech II light drones. At any level of missioning these are your necessary frig tackler killers.

If you are getting almost all angel mission then even put purgers on the cane and passive shield regen tank it. two LSE, invuln, and ab in mids, three purger rigs. You'll be able to fit heavys and 650s witha PDU or two even with low skills. In fact get two canes and armor tank the other and you can do any level 3 mission. Use the armor one for sansha and blood raider missions. I've done level 3s in both canes with a noob alt that had quite a lot less than 5mil sp.

Until the tiericide comes and op'd BC shield regen is nerfed, the Cyclone (who wants to worry about cap when you don't have to) is simply sub optimal to a passive gank Hurricane.

edit- all that being said, 10 days is sorta young to tackle level 3s iirc Smile

If you do decide to go the Hurricane route, I recommend something like this as a goal to train towards. I used something a lot like this for the Caldari Cosmos missions and some Level 3 missions (just different drones/ammo for Caldari space than Minmatar space). It works very well: decent damage projection, good mobility, and good tank.

Yes, that's why I said it is something he can train towards. In the meantime, he can fit Meta 4. Of course, by the time he trains to fly a nice T2 Hurricane, he'll hopefully have progressed right on through Level 3s, Level 4s, and discovered the joys of PvP.

To be honest 10 days old toon is to young to fly a cane, really. If you have to fit mods helping with PG you are crippling tank/gank abilities of any ship which is ok if your skills compensate lack of dmg/tank mod in this slot but 10 days old toon most definitely needs every little shred of percent of bonus that gyro or SPR is giving.

I currently fly AC ruppie in L2s and they are easy, too easy sometimes. I have L3 agents available and I tried one mission, it happen to be Portal To War (5 parts mission). 1st part was relatively easy for a ruppie and my skills but 2nd got me into structure in less than 30 seconds and I am lucky I managed to warp out.

I would say stick to L2s while training for T2 tank, dmg mods, drones and gunz, and I would say train them in this order. DC II and gyro II make big difference for such young toons, more agile and damaging and tanked drones will greatly compensate your T1 guns damage.

L3s are more profitable than L2s but only if you can finish them in similar time. If L3 is taking you 5 times longer than L2 you are in fact losing money because L3 rewards are only what, 2 or 3 times bigger than in L2s?

Have you done the Sisters of Eve Epic Arc yet? If not, locate the starting agent, Sister Alitura I believe is her name.

After you're done with that, you'll have lots more isk, and have spent some time getting more skills up.

For level 3s, you're going to want a lot more sp, or be prepared to lose a lot of ships to some missions, while breezing through others.

Shield Hurricane is your best bet for lvl3s, and lvl4s when you can fit tech ii defensive modules.

You have the first instances of missions where a techII npc frig may scramble making you unable to warp at the most incovenient moment (i.e. just about the same time as your tank is failing). This is why they suggest getting t2 light drones first.

I think you should be fine with autos and t1 light drones but I havent been doing lvl3s with a low skill char since... February 2005 so I might be off the mark...

You guys suggesting to train for Missiles, Drones and Arties? Really? Three weaponsystems at once? You will need small T2 drones later in level 3 missions, nothing more. You can train for arties, but only for the Cane.

Rupture -> Cane-> Mael-> Macha

You need to train autocannons and drones. Don't start training missiles, you won't need it.
Also, you will need at least 6-10 Months to fly a battleship the way it was meant to, with maybe 90% of its maximum capability, but only if you stay with one race and one weapon system.

as you ain't got good fitting skills on that new of a pilot I urge you to consider the Cyclone before the Hurricane.
its a bit slower but have a better tank (with cap boosters)

[Cyclone, Noobfit]

5x 425mm Medium 'Scout' Autocannon I (EMP M)
3x Prototype 'Arbalest' Rapid Light Missile Launcher (Nova Light Missile)

Large C5-L Emergency Shield Overload I
Medium Tapered Capacitor Infusion I (Cap Booster 800)
EM Ward Field I
Thermic Dissipation Field I
Optical Tracking Computer I (Optimal Range Script)

3x Gyrostabilizer I
Damage Control I

Medium Projectile Collision Accelerator I
Medium Core Defense Field Extender I
Medium Capacitor Control Circuit I

5x hobgoblin drones

the Midslots is interchangable for example

3x Harderns (Missions specific)
2x Hardners (Mission specific) + TC (Spec for range there is somtimes rats that like to linger 20km + from you ... you need to hit them hard as you ain't got a AB.

2x Harderns (Mission specific) + AB ( for thoes long travel missions)

its remarkable sturdy its not fast but it can take alot of beating
you should cycle your shield booster so the Cap booster is just there for emergency power needs

last time i used it before i got my Cane i normaly had 1 Capchage loaded and another 11 in my cargo hold (just in case) in level 3 early on i normaly ended up using 3-4 each mission so consider getting a hauler also to get you enough where you do your missions.

its alot less skill intense then the Cane is ... I still love my cane now later on but the Cyclone is far from a bad ship early in the game.

If your restricted too mini ships. I think Cyclone is much better suited to a young mission runner than a Cain.
Its so much easier for a new player to fit and is ideal for an active shield tank.

Until you can't fit a T2 module Tank, you should't fly a BC.

Here is what I used, when I was a young Pilot:

Example is Serpentis tank:

[Hurricane, Cane PvE low SP]
Beta Reactor Control: Shield Power Relay I
Beta Reactor Control: Shield Power Relay I
Beta Reactor Control: Shield Power Relay I
Gyrostabilizer II
Gyrostabilizer II
Tracking Enhancer II

Large Shield Extender II
Kinetic Deflection Amplifier II
Heat Dissipation Field II
Invulnerability Field II

650mm Medium 'Scout' Artillery I, EMP M
650mm Medium 'Scout' Artillery I, EMP M
650mm Medium 'Scout' Artillery I, EMP M
650mm Medium 'Scout' Artillery I, EMP M
650mm Medium 'Scout' Artillery I, EMP M
650mm Medium 'Scout' Artillery I, EMP M
Drone Link Augmentor I
Small Tractor Beam I

Medium Core Defence Field Purger I
Medium Core Defence Field Purger I
Medium Core Defence Field Purger I

Hobgoblin II x5

400 DPS
360 Tank
capstable

This should work even with low skills. If it doesn't, you main train it better.
