Unable to play EVE on Ubuntu with Launcher

Let me start by saying I have read almost every thread and post dating back to February, and while it is entirely possible I have missed the information I require, I have tried. I am new to Linux (today, actually) and after spending more time than I should have needed to install the game via Wine I find myself unable to play

Here is a summary of my specs

Min. Requirement Hardware
Ubuntu 11.10 Desktop (32-bit
Wine 1.3.2

What I have done so far

Let me briefly tell you how I installed EVE in case I did something improperly. After installing Wine and winetricks, I used Wine to install the latest Windows EVE client. Afterwards I tried running the launcher and without being prompted to patch pressed play. I was then given the error "MS Visual C++ Runtime Library - Runtime Error (file path to EVE) abnormal program termination"

I then looked through many eveonline forum posts and some additional forums including WineHQ installed winetricks corefonts, vcrun2005, vcrun2008, vcrun2010, and addtionally directx9. I then tried running the launcher again with the same results.

"Attempt 1" After searching more I made sure that msvcr80, msvcr90, and msvcr100 were set to native, builtin via winecfg and ran the repair tool, then the launcher. Same results

"Attempt 2" I tried setting msvcr100 to builtin, native as some reported success, and received a "r6034" error. Same with both 100 and 90 set to b,n and with all three set to b,n the launcher refused to load

Update: "Attempt 3" I looked some more and tried loading the launcher with n,b settings and then switching to b,n before pressing play. This appears to have worked, but I now receive a "Outdated graphics card, Shader Model 3 required" which I gather means I need a better graphics card. However, I was told by a friend who plays EVE and who is the previous owner of the PC I am using that they ran the client on this machine. Is there a fix for this as well or have the graphic requirements gone up in the past 2 years and they haven't changed the system req. page?

This is all that I have tried so far. I hope that someone is able to help, and if they are, that the information will help someone else with the same troubles somewhere down the road. Like I previously stated I'm very new to Linux so please keep that in mind when replying. Thank you for your time. :)

There were changes in the past that made some players quit EVE, because of the requirement for shader model 3. CCP had pushed the technology forward and abandoned some of the old code, because they did not want to maintain it any longer. It is something we had to accept. It happened at least twice from what I can remember and it will happen again. The short story is that you need a somewhat decent graphics card to run EVE regardless of what type of operating system you are using.

You also should stop using any WINE version before 1.4. 1.4 is now the latest stable release and will be so for this year (its development will continue with 1.5.x). It should be available for all distributions by now. The sooner you get to it the better.

But say, what graphics card do you have?

I see. That's quite unfortunate as I was looking forward to playing EVE on this machine, but I understand CCP's actions. I will take your advice and keep WINE more up-to-date for the other games I play. :)

As for my graphics card, I believe this computer uses an Intel 945g embedded card, which, from what I can tell, only support shader model 2.0. The last time the previous owner played was around 2009 which leaves plenty of time for them to have changed what code they supported.

Although not the answer I was hoping for, I'd like to thank you for taking the time to respond to my post, Whitehound!

There used to be a tool called 3D Analyzer that could emulate shader model 2 on hardware with only model 1. I do not know if there is anything out that can emulate model 3. You might want to ask around on the 3DGuru forum or other places.
