I have no plans to use any raid configuration. I just want a drive to clone everything on to from my older drive and use the older one as a backup as it is brand new.

I've had good experiences with Western Digital.

Probably more than my whole computer if they're a decent size. All he accomplished for wasting that much money is slightly faster loading screens. So uh....grats on being terrible with money Copine?

Then you need to clone the OS partition to the SSD, and then the rest to a main drive. Unless you're going to drop serious cash for a big enough SSD.... And we all know how broke you is so...

Confirming that RAID0 SSDs are absolutely amazing, I only have 2 in RAID0 but its still impressive.

To the OP, you cant go wrong with Western Digital Caviar Black drives, especially their 1TB version.

ujelly bro?

slightly faster?
You seem to be misinformed about how fast SSD go in RAID
I essentially get no loading screens whatsoever, be it level loads, savegame loads, or game boot times.
Also extremely handy for rendering of HD movies, video editing, frapsing, system page file, software installs, and general computing use

As for cost? 5 months ago it was $600 for the SSD in raid, that got me 360GB of space. Quite economical for read/write of over 1gb/s

Personally I go to the bank and ask them for a no-interest loan of <$1k, dump it all into the comp, pay it off at like $15 a week for a year, rinse and repeat every 12 months

But hey if you're too busy hatin to go get yourself a budget friendly computer that's your business, enjoy waiting 5 minutes for a level to load on the pentium 3 you are probably using

There should be a rather awesome pic here

That might or might not work. The new drive will be different from the old drive, it might require different driver and/or be of different capacity.

Best case scenario, everything works fine.

Most likely scenario, Windows will give you some errors because it expects to deal with old drive, but in reality is on a new drive.

The smart way to do what you want to do is this:
1) Get external hd of capacity greater than hd you want to backup.
2) Get external boot device with OS to run your comp without using the hd you want to back up, Live CD or usb.
3) Boot your comp with Live CD, start the OS on the cd
4) The hd you want to backup has OS on it, but this OS is not used to run the comp at this time.
5) Make the image of the hd you want to backup
6) Copy image onto external hd
Done.

If something goes wrong with hd you want to back, you just reload it with the image file.

Norton Ghost used to be really really good program for this sort of thing. I don't know if it is still in high regard.

Acronis True Image WD edition works fine.

I can copy my OS to any number of different HDDs without error. This is what I love about acronis.
So dont worry about errors.

SSD only really speeds up loading things tbh... lets say your bout to play BF3... a SSD means anything off the HDD loads faster.. so the mission loads much faster with SSD, but while playing the SSD doens't help much if at all...

imo
just get a 500gb or 1tb 7200 rpg HDD, go on new egg and find one that has good reviews...
if you have spare $$ get a small SSD for windows and maybe 1-2 games. using a ssd as a boot drive is very advantageous
1 windows will boot uber fast
2 when you have to reinstall windows you only lose windows + maybe your game, but reinstalling it won't take long

personally, i don't want a SSD, for the price you could just get a better gfx card and play better games.

My windows is custom and already boots really fast, plus I hardly ever have to reboot to begin with.

I need a drive that is going to give me a better score than "5.9" without being a SSD. Is that possible.

You wanna do this based on a windows score?

And no it's not possible because scsi or the 10k raptor drives cost more than an SSD. (With less performance unless their the enterprise scsi)... Which cost way more.

You have 3 options. SSD, hybrid drive or raid array. And you really can't raid an existing drive with software...nor even a controller from my understanding. (which cost 400 bucks, and are for server MB's)

The 2TB Western Digital Caviar Blacks are nearly as fast (in benchmarks) as the 10k RPM Raptor drives. You get a lot more space to, 2TB Vs 300GB. A fraction less performance in exchange for a massive increase in space is well worth it if SSDs are out of the question.

The times are seconds apart... which in HDD/digital time is a life time. Read access is 5 second difference...

Granted some specs are close, but once that 2Tb starts filling up seek & read time will increase.

But no the difference in performance between the 2 would be noticeable. However those 10k are outclassed in every way except read/write (Only at the same time) times by an MLC SSD. And more expensive... Not sure why you'd go with one anymore for home use.

Ok Ok Ok...

But how do I get my Windows Experience Index for HDD above 5.9....

Everything else is 7.3-7.9
But the 5.9 is holding me back. Bottlenecking my system.

Raptors are terrible value for money in all honesty, you can get a high quality 1TB drive and a decent sized SSD for the price. My own build uses that, both the SSD and larger storage drive are doubled in RAID to prevent data loss.

I also have those 2TB WD Caviar Blacks in my NAS/Media extender system to and the performance is great, I would defiantly recommend them over the Raptors any day.

You realize that's an arbitrary number? A friend of mine installed an SSD for his OS, and windows kept the score below 7 still... granted HDD can "bottleneck" but the real question is whether or not you even notice it.. Not some score.

Once again you're going to need to fork over monies for an SSD.

It's a meaningless statistic and not really a good indicator of how decent your computer is, but if you really want to know the SSD raid setup got me 7.9 ^^

Seriously though look into if whether your mobo supports hybrid drive, then you get most of the benefit of an SSD at a more reasonable price

My mobo is military grade, it supports p much everything.

What is this hybrid drive you speak of?

It's a classic spin drive that uses a small SSD as a cache.
Say, you get 1TB cav blue/black, then you can get like a 16-64gb SSD (cheap) as a cache, then you end up with 1TB drive with near SSD performance (some caveats apply).

Fairly sure you need Z68 chipset if you want to make your own like described there, but you can also buy premade hybrid drive, I think seagate and hitachi both make one

edit: It might be the P67 chip actually, I cbf looking it up, I'm still on X58 heh
