How'd he do that?! Got uncloaked.

I hope this is the right forum, because I'm pretty sure this was a "tactic".

I was on my main character flying around 0.0 space for the first time in my cov-ops frigate (Nemesis), just wanting to explore and see what null-sec was all about. I was about 40 jumps out from Jita which is where I left from earlier that night, and decided to turn around and head back and seriously look into finding a null sec corp, because amazingly, it wasn't as scary as I had believed it would be.

Anyways, I had hit several warp bubbles, but had no problems with them because I've gotten pretty good at activating the cover ops cloak with little time out of cloak. I jumped through a gate, right into another warp bubble, with a hurricane about 18k away from me, so I didn't see any danger. I clicked on a position that would take me out of the bubble, on the opposite side from the hurricane. I immediate cloaked as soon as I started to turn, and was cloaked for about 10 secs making my way out of the bubble when something flew over my ship. It wasn't a drone, I want to say it looked like a probe. Needless to say, I was uncloaked and , podded pretty quickly.

My question is this: Was it a probe, how did he shoot it in my direction, and how can I learn this technique to use myself in the future.

Any insights would be appreciated.

Interceptor? they can see were you uncloak/recloak and quickly accelerate that way.

It was definitely something he fired from his ship. He and I were the only two ships in system, so it couldn't have been an intercepter.

Both probes and drones can uncloak your ship, which means bad times for you mate.

Bombs can decloak you if they get close enough.

Oh yeah, trust me, I found that out the hard way last night.

I'm just curious if that's how he did it, and more importantly, how can I do that. Was it just luck that he shot it close enough to where I was? Or was it actually something he was able to do?

Maybe a survey probe? Would that do it? I think it'd require gimping the fit a bit to wedge it on a Cane, but maybe that would do it. If so, it's a clever tactic, lol.

Was it a cargo container? I've seen a spread of those used as a "minefield" to de-cloak ships.

As a seasoned PVP er it had to be one of the following:
wreck
cargo container
a drone
a biomass.

If he was by himself and he saw you. If he had mwd hot , he could have approached you at full speed with drones orbiting and got the decloak. He could have also put drones or cans near where you were. When you started moving you may have been close to something in there. 2500 km and lower to get decloaked.

No clue what is was.

That said, never align, cloak, and stay in your aligned path.

As soon as you cloak, you should have either switched direction to a new object or started burning back to the gate.

The usual trick in such a situation is:

1. Wait for your 30 second session change timer to expire. You will still have 30 seconds of gate cloak left.
2. Select your warp to target or select the stargate to go back the way you came.
3. In rapid order, press:
Align
Microwarp drive
Cloak
(usually helps to have mwd and cloak set to hot keys)
4. As soon as possible, warp or jump out.

If no mwd or you really are worried, as soon as you cloak, change direction. As your opponent may be watching, align to the same target, and catch you before you can warp.

Yes, I flew right through the center of the bubble Schalac.

It had a thruster jet line behind it so was definitely a powered piece. I was literally sitting there saying to myself " I wonder what that is?"... then "Oh crap, I'm uncloaked".

I know I made some mistakes Lady, but it was my first time out in nullsec. I just thought it was interesting, cause it's something I haven't seen before. And the guy who did it, is either extremely lucky, or extremely talented.

"Yes, I flew right through the center of the bubble Schalac."

What it could be is you ran into the bubble...meaning the actual anchored item emitting the bubble...

Otherwise I have no idea. Normally when people are decloaked and can't tell what did it, its a corpse floating in space... normally.

"Stuff that can go on a 'cane, with a thruster trail animation that isnt a drone or missile"

umm... someone said survey probe, but ive never seen one of them in space, so idk. even if it WAS one of them, the rest of the cane fit would have been ****. the expanded launcher takes HUGE fittings.

im gonna lean towards "you got too close to the bubble itself, or it was a kind of drone you hadnt seen before, or else someone else was there and you missed it (although that is unlikely)."

Trying to get out of the bubble is usually much riskier then crashing gate...

I'm starting to think you're right Silas. I have a lot of experience with small drones, but not large ones. It very well could have been just a drone.

Sounds like it was the bubble generator itself you hit.

If you flew right through the center of the bubble, you likely got decloaked by the anchored bubble generator.

It is possible that he had an expanded probe launcher fitted. Scanning probes do not shoot out from the ship. They deploy about 2000m from the ship and sit there until a scan command is issued from the scanner tool. They do not move about the grid on their own. He could have used a moon survey probe. Those do shoot out directly in front of the ship. As one person said, its a novel approach. Expanded Probe Launcher I requires 220tf CPU to fit. A nano-cane should be able to manage that. (Don't quote me on that, I'm Caldari.)

The most frequent reason a bomber or other covert ship gets decloaked is due to something on grid that is not on your overview or your current bracket profile.

I once got decloaked even with all brackets on and biomass enabled on my overview. No ship near me. Gave me a frickin heart attack as I was in a Falcon with about 5 Hurricanes within point range. Luckily none of them was an insta-locker. Get your covert ops skill to 5 to reduce your recloak delay to its bare minimum.

First cloak, then activate MWD. Much better for obvious reasons.
There was a time this was not possible,b/c a prop mod couldn't be activated after hitting cloak.
But it was changed some time ago.

If you activate the MWD just after the cloak, you get one cicle MWD with your ship cloaked.
