Ransom botters -- is it allowed?

Hello,

I've made it my personal mission to try to catch as many botters as I can. As everyone knows, it takes a lot of time and effort catching them as they usually safe up when you enter local. However, so far I've taken out 3 Tengus in the last 2 weeks worth a total of 3.5+ bil.

With the first two tengus, I blew them up and reported them. However, the most recent tengu I took out, I sent a mail and made a proposal: They give me a sum of ISK, in return I don't report them and don't bother them again. No answer yet tho, so who knows.

I'm wondering if this is even allowed in game as I would be profiting from illegal activities. And if they were to catch the botter, (especially with the new dev blog out about botting), they may take the cash from me as it was originally from botting.

Not that I had any intentions of upholding my end of the bargain; I would still hunt them down and report them. But I'm just wondering if I'm putting my own account at risk if I were to receive a 'player donation' from a bot

You would be receiving the tainted ISK. Seems illegal to me.

Edit: And not just receiving it, but knowingly asking for it. Can't even claim ignorance.

How do you ransom a botter?

Since by definition, no one is at the controls, wouldn't this be a rather boring way to mess with a bot? Shocked

I would cover your @$$. Not sure but I believe we are required to report any violations of the gameplay agreements.

To quote Lfod Shi

The ratting itself is PvE. Getting away with it is PvP.

Just ask for ransom and/or protection money while making very indirect references to botting. Indirect references are hard to use as evidence against you, while the botter's guilty conscience will make the reference obvious.

Pon Farr Memorial: once every 7 years, all the carebears in high-sec must PvP or they will be temp-banned.

Ultimately a question for CCP Sreegs, perhaps you should check out this thread and ask him there, as he is rather active in it at the moment.

Black mail and Extortion are the back bones of politics in Eve.

BUT

Once his account gets banned, and they track all the ISK, you will get it taken away from you.

Report bot button... you did your part in eve. If ccp was worried about you getting isk, they would check it out and ban right away...

So what if you also turn some isk off the guy. As I said you did your part and reported him...

Read ccp screegs new dev blog. Sounds like the isk you received from that would be taken away at least. Just to be on the "safe" side I wouldn't accept any isk from someone you know is botting and/or involved in RMT.

Good job on blowing up botters woot

Way I see it, worst they can do is tempban you while they investigate, take the ISK you got off convicted botters, and leave it at that.
Assuming you're not guilty of anything else.

Not really sure it would matter since you should be reporting said bots and if they are dealt with, the money is removed by CCP which would include any money they sent to you as a ransom payment.

I ransomed a bitter to his guild once in UO. They paid to save their reputation.

How do you ransom a bot, that's the question.

Did they write that in to the macro? Pay 2 billion in ransom on certain cases? Ransoming an RMT player is just another transaction that counts as a legitimate way to do illegitimate things. I think the status Quo answer is to report them.

You send them a mail and hope that the operator reads it. Chances are it wont happen, but you never know. I've seen a few operators actually get in game and do stuff

If ccp removes botted isk from your wallet they are going to have some major rage threads...

How does the op KNOW it is a bot?

Do we all need to make sure to not accept ANY isk ANY more?

After all how do you know ANY ransom is not botted isk?

stop failing people.

Also, a tentative answer from the man himself:

Question, as per this topic: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=91174

tl;dr: can you ransom botters (send a mail and hope they read it after you blow them up) under the premise that you won't report them or bother them again (but of course do both those things).

Basically, scamming them for ISK on false premise (legal in EVE), but the ISK is tainted (illegal and might get taken away)

I'll have to get back to you on that. I believe it would be fine but it's a hypothetical. Bots get dinged for isk generated and we're not looking at passing that on unless it's going bad places.

There is some obvious bot behavior that will give it away. Let's say you waste their mining ship, yet their pod still warps to and from a station/POS at regular intervals. Sure, there's an infinitely small chance that the player is just pretending to be a bot, but let's be real here.

There are plenty of other behaviors that give it away, as well. Entirely observable by the OP.
