i'm wondering, is there actually a formula for the price based on known supply/demand and expected changes, and does anyone actually calculate the expected prices or is it completely arbitrary, as in a few guys think that's what the price should be like and have the capital to hold the prices there?

I think there are done some calculations where isk per hour is taken into account.
This is purely speculation, based on the fact that ccp has stated they want miners to be the primrary source of minerals.

Any ideas what kind of calculation?

At a guess one involving numbers and operators such as ( +, * )

Does that help?

I would point out that there are high estimates and low estimates.
I tried looking at how much of the mineral is actually supplied by drone regions. How much did the mineral x drop in value after drone regions were introduced.
How many miners are there that actually does mine in nulsec when the isk per hour is good (That is only based on personal experience as Ive lived both in drone regions and outside).

Minerals like morphite etc is rarely mined because of the huge drone region supply wich also drove the price down from around 20 000 to 4000 (morphite).
ABC plummited aswell when drone regions were introduced so if they change the mechanics involving drone poop in such a manner I suspect they will, prices will rise.

The only thing that can be done is to estimate at what time miners will start mining again, 60 mil isk per hour, 70 mil isk per hour, 80 mil isk per hour?
According to qen and the fanfest videos theres not a whole lot of people mining and CCP might want to change that.

So a general rise of mineral prices accross the board is expected?

Personally I dont think low ends will rise much.
Highends are what is supplied mostly from drone regions. I saw some numbers somewhere and is apparantly 40 percent that comes from drone regions.
I can't back that up at this moment because I am at work and don't have time to read the qen again and or search for sources.

Well yeah, low end minerals are supplied mostly through high sec/whatever source.

High ends are the real deal with the drone regions.
