Hi there ive been playing for some time but it was years ago and PLEX did not exist. You can buy a plex from the account management screen, and then sell it in game for isk, so would i be able to buy a plex of a friend or a site such as ebay?

I ask as i saw websites selling Gametime codes which can be split into PLEX and then sold for isk.

Then there random websites that sell plex.

But all of it could be called RWT, but some RWT is legit and other isnt?

It seems to be a bit of a grey area and i was wondering if someone could clear it up for me

thanks

easy solution : buy game time codes from CCP with $$$ or buy plex in game with isk. Only deal with retailers that you trust. Never give a shady site you credit card info...

This.

Only ever buy it from CCP online or in the market itself.

The pie is a tautology

A GTC (60-day code of several characters) is an out-of-game item which can be sold for cash to other people, or can be gifted, or used by yourself, or even "split up" into 2x PLEX.
The only EULA-approved way of swapping a GTC for ISK is via the secure trade method (under account management), where the buyer automatically wires the ISK to the seller, and the 60 days are automatically applied to the buyer's account (no resale possible).
Basically, you can do almost whatever the heck you like with a GTC, because it's an out-of-game thing.

A PLEX however (30-day) is an IN-GAME ITEM and as such is subjected to rules completely different from those applicable to GTCs.
You MAY NOT sell a PLEX for anything other than ISK (and by extension, anything else you can trade for ISK would be fine too, but a little contrived - best stick with ISK only).
Under no circumstances is it ok by the EULA to ever buy or sell a PLEX for cash. Buying or selling a PLEX for real-life cash CAN GET YOU BANNED.

TL;DR:
* you may trade a GTC for cash
* you MAY NOT trade a PLEX for cash

Exception: You can buy PLEX for cash from Account Management: https://secure.eveonline.com/PLEX/

Most of the guys have already answered this for you but I wanted to confirm that buying a PLEX from any website other than EVE Account Management is considered RMT.

You can buy Game Time Codes (GTC's) from many of our partners such as Shattered Crystal which is fine Smile

I have a related question that you may be able to clear up for me.

I have a friend who is at the moment playing the trial version of Eve, now I know that money is tight for him and that he may not go to the full version of the game (even though he is enjoying it) because of his finances.

My question is this : Were I to buy a GTC code and mail it to him, would that then convert his trial account to full? Or would he not be able to use it?

Yes, you can use GTCs to upgrade a trial account.

You could also just gift him a PLEX, or send him enough ISK to buy a PLEX.

In fact, the overall best strategy would be to (re?)invite him with a buddy account (21-day trial, select PLEX as your reward) and he should use the PLEX you give him (or a PLEX bought by him with ISK you give him) to activate the account (it's eligible for the buddy promotion bonus).
That way, he gets 51 days of full account time, and you get your PLEX "back" (a different PLEX, but it's not like it really matters what instance ID the PLEX has) - basically, you just gifted him 51 free days of full EVE experience and it cost you nothing but a bit of effort to explain to him what to do.

Granted, if he's near the end of his self-acquired 14-day trial, he might not appreciate starting from scratch after almost 2 weeks, then again, it's a lot more free gametime in his lap, and he might not make the same mistakes everybody almost unavoidably makes their first time around, so, eh, depends on how you "sell" it to him.

That looks like a good plan - many thanks for taking the time to write it all down for me.

Note that he will have to log out and log back in for the trial restrictions to lift after PLEX activation.
And you might need to wait up to the next downtime to receive the PLEX reward.
