New explorer and confused

Hi all,

I'm not exactly new. I have been playing EVE on and off since the launch of the game. Now it looks like I might be able to stick around for a while and I wanted to put my hands on exploring.

Baring in mind that I like to dabble in everything a bit. I do like to be flexible. It's one of the reasons I started out with a Minmatar character.

Reading up on the forums, having done all the tutorial missions, I find myself a bit in a bind.

I do understand that I can train my character to do anything I would like to in the game, I however feel that it makes more sense to roll a character of the race of which I will be flying their ships the most. Not that I am a strict roleplayer, but it makes no sense to me to roll a Minmatar character that effectively flies Amarr ships all the time. Just to name an example.

Anyway, reading up on exploring I find a lot of people recommending Caldari ships. At the same time, I do like EW, and also there it seems that there are many that prefer Caldari as well.

Is it true that for exploring in general it makes more sense to fly Caldari ships? I have no problem rerolling a new Caldari character, considering that my character is about a week old, so not much would be lost. Yet if it really makes more sense to fly Caldari ships as opposed to Minmatar, I'd rather know now, than 3 months from now, when I wouldn't want to switch race anymore due to time invested into a character.

Again, I know I can train whatever I want on any race, but for me it would make more sense to roll a Caldari character if their ships are more suitable for exporing and EW.

Any advice would be highly appreciated.

The only Caldari ship that's vastly better than other races' ships for exploration is the Tengu... The Tengu is unbalanced, however, and according to the devs at Fanfest it's due for a nerf pretty soon.

Minmatar do just fine for exploration (speaking from experience)

Just about every race can do exploration well, so you really cant lose. I fly Amarr and rock the Legion. Works well for all the exploration and missions I run for it.

first if you haven't read this thread: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=77176&find=unrea
stop and go do so, its one of the best pieces I've seen in a long tim

To answer your specific question, your race NO LONGER has any effect at all except for RP purposes.
Once upon a time not so long ago it made a big difference in starting skills and it was very desirable to be caldari.

so roll a new toon if you want, but the race of the toon will have no effect, and it was mentioned that mixed bloodlines might be coming soon so an even greater variety of portraits (the only lasting thing affected by your race) will be possible.

As to exploring and ew... for those I would highly recommend the caldari ships: kitsune/falcon/scorpion in particular are excellent ships in small gang pvp. For exploring the buzzard is only slightly better because it has more cpu/pg than its contemporaries

As to other ships, keep in mind the races all have their strengths (imho)
best hauler Gal Iteron 5
best T1 frig Min Rifte
best T1 BS Gal Dominix (with drones fully trained
best freighter Cal Charon
best alpha BS Min Malestro
best newb friendly mission ship Cal Drak
best long range sniper (tie) ama apocolypse, cal rohk
best T3 Cal Tengu (although any 'gu will DIAF at close range usually)

if you look into it deep enough each race has strengths and weaknesses, if there wasn't we'd all be flying the same ships.

Note that due to nerfs and rebalances and game mechanic changes no ship stays FOTM forever.
Eventually you will train all the race ships accordingly.
This week I flew a Gallente interceptor, a Caldari battlecruiser and then an Amarr and a Minmatar Battleship for example.

Minmatar have a scan ship, a BC that can fit a perfectly legitimate active omni-tank, and a t3 cruiser that... is a t3 cruiser, and thus fine for exploration.

Unless you're going to invest in the activity to the very utmost of your available time and effort, which sounds like the opposite of what you want to do, then you don't need to get all intense in your min/maxing, just pick a race and weapon type and stick with it. Minmatar/Projectiles is as good as any, though you'll likely end up burning a lot of skills on getting both armor and shield tanks up to viability so you can use all the hulls properly.
