But still due diligence? Who here did due diligence before setting out on a crusade against the Mittani? Not a single one of you. No One.

Your games of attempted equivalency are ingenious but really quite disgusting. The claim that no one should ever publicly point out genuine bad behaviour because some nut-case might make RL threats to the badly behaving individual is clearly bullshit and would preclude any newspaper ever publishing any article in which they report someone doing something wrong.

The idea that because pointing out such behaviour may mean that nut-cases read about it then implies that pointing out said behaviour is morally equivalent to actively encouraging horrible behaviour is really pretty feeble and doesn't stand a moment's scrutiny. Your terrible implicit argument is based on a failure to distinguish between reasons for making information public when it is precisely the reasons, and context, for making that information public that are at issue.

Of course, CCP did absolutely the right thing if they instantly banned the guy who made the threats but trying to shift moral responsibility for his actions onto anyone who criticised the Mittani is completely invalid. I would also indicate that, given the depths I have seen goons go to over the last week to justify their leader's behaviour I now have little doubt that they would happily stage such an incident, so I find that I have to suspend judgement about whether any real incident occurred. It would be easier to believe it had done if the Mittani had not announced his intent to make the gaming media who sullied his good name with slurs like 'cyber-bully' pay for their actions. Unfortunatelly, in the context of an explicit campaign to control the media this just looks like the kind of play that goons would make.

Quote:

(7:03:21 PM) directorbot@goonfleet.com/directorbot: RAGE: My people, Brendan Drain of Massively - who forced CCP's hand in banning me by lying and referring to me as a 'Cyber Bully' - has announced that he will 'apologize' for his senationalist gutter journalism. But I doubt that he will actually own his mistakes to the point of editing the offending lines in his past articles, a classic shlock journo move, the 'buried retraction'. Tonight, as we burn Tenal, I will be going on Eve Radio to discuss lynch mob that Brendan Drain has jinned up with his shameful desire to churn hits on his unpopular column. We will be mobilizing the entire Clusterfuck into a media campaign to fight back against this lazy, cut&paste 'gaming media'.

While this may seem to be about me alone, it impacts every single one of us - in the eyes of these 'journalists' who do not play EVE, everything that takes place here - nonconsensual, consequential PVP - is 'bullying'. If we are to keep CCP from being forced by outside pressure to turn EVE into Hello Kitty Online, it is up to us to go on the offensive against the media themselves.

How convenient that a lynch-mob should dramatically appear at just this moment.

Actually, in the U.S., any time a newspaper prints a story about anyone who's commited a crime, they themselves have met the criteria for libel. To libel someone you print something that affects their standing in their community, and on their job. Say Joe Blow robbed a bank, guess what? Thing is, they have a defense...absent malice. So....

I would like to get serious here for once...and you thought I was serious all along...ye the easily bamboozled. When a group of people make it a point to regale themselves with a reputation of sordid, dishonest and virtual (digital) barbaric behavior, then they come out and expect to have some sort of even-handed fairness applied to them, it's more than just laughable.

On top of that, because scamming, lying, cheating and stealing are the admitted hallmarks of this particular group in question, I find it impossible to believe anything they say about anything. As far as I know this entire "scandal" is a put-up job by the Goons themselves as they suck wind trying to regain their bad boy reputations so recently stained by @$$hat behavior.

This may have actually happened, what the OP claims. But, that's too bad. We have to take his word for it. Videos and broadcasts can be staged, edited, photoshopped...we have to take a Goonfan's word for it. Guess what? Fogettaboutit.
Ain't gonna happen. I wouldn't believe a Goon if he said my name is Serene Repose. I'd have to check the label in my shirt.

We must accommodate the idiocracy.

if your point is..... because of all this Mittani is the victim. You are a sick fanboy. If someone made threats to Mittani's wife....the authorities should deal with it appropriately. To ensue that we all made Mittani a victim (and or condone ****) because he tried to crack a joke (that could have resulted in damage) is a a feeble attempt to make light of carelessness that should not be tolerated.

to use that example to plead your case is disgusting.

Disclaimer: I absolutely do not approve of threatening anyone in RL, not even "as a joke", and hope anyone who does anything like that gets permabanned immediately, I do not even approve of pointing and laughing at people in the game in order to make them bad in RL, and I do not approve of the recent Mittani-bashing threads that have popped up. Any behavior the sole purpose of which is to "harvest tears" (and those are always RL tears, no matter how much you say "it is just a game") is deplorable, regardless of target and how much they deserve it.

But that said, a Goon asking "Is this what Eve Online has degraded to?" is mind-boggling. You folks have tried for years to deliberately degrade EVE, to make it about pointing and laughing, and you have stepped across civil behavior lines repeatedly by e.g. circulating private evemail from people who appear RL hurt, even suicidal. How can you now be indignant that you have actually succeeded, and beyond what you hoped? Did you honestly think that if you encourage human beings to bring out the worst in themselves and go further and further in being tough assholes, you suddenly can stop the development when it suits you? Did you honestly think that when you feel that things are now assholish enough, people will telepathically notice and stop going further?

That's not how it works. If you encourage people to "ruin the game for you", "harvest tears", "make them ragequit", etc, it will become a competition in which someone will always go one step further. Maybe in your head there always was a limit to it. Maybe you believed that people knew what it was. But people are not like that. If you encourage them to be mean, they will be mean. And some day they might very well be meaner than you liked. "I never meant it to go this far" won't help then, if you never explicitly spoke of the limits or encouraged a culture where it was ok to admit that well, really, we are not such bad guys, I really did feel bad blowing up that ship.

As sad as it is, you lie in the bed you made.
So you're saying that the threat against external factors are the consequences of our actions and are justified?

No. Absolutely not.

Ladies and Gentlemen - enough is enough.

If you think that you can target players in this community with real life threats or engage in any sort of hate campaign then I assure you that our actions will be swift and final.

The GM's on duty have taken action and did so very quickly. We would encourage players to submit a petition in cases like this so that we are aware of the situation as soon as possible.

This thread will also be locked with the primary reason that those trying to twist this situation for their own agenda is resulting in mass trolling and flaming.
