I'm considering starting a new account. Can I invite myself using the "invite a friend" ? Is this a better deal than the power of two? Any advantages to either?

Thanks in advance.

And also, how do you activate this? There are no power of two options on the account page. It just looks normal.

Power of 2 is ended, you can use the Buddy Invite for yourself no problem, just send the invite to your own address, it can be the same one as your current account is registered with, it's up to you. I've used it for my accounts and so have plenty of other players.
