Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I present to you this for your consideration.

Unlike virtually every other profession in the game, mining is a highly scalable activity. Yeah, profit per character per hour is abysmal. But if you consider that you can keep adding accounts to the process you should start to realize that the raw ISK per hour number can get quite high. It definitely competes with level 4 mission running.

Granted, most people who mine don't do this. People who mine do it as a relaxing activity - something they can do while they watch a movie, do homework, etc... After all you only have to shuffle your ore around once every 3 minutes.
