I cyber bully myself everyday. There's a couple of counters.
* Don't pay your internet bill.
* Look at the babes walking outside, and think back on your life so far, then ask yourself if you really can afford wasting those opportunities. P
* Cloaky camp yourself back.
* Call the care police.

AFK-cloaking in a system near you.

I find it hard to accept anyone could be dumb enough to commit suicide over a video game.

I don't think it is such a long stretch.

I've had friends that suffered from severe depression and there were times that damn ... it was not a pretty experience. My ex suffers from it and the tortured phone calls at 3am in the morning talking about suicide - yeah. Those are things best handled by the authorities and people who can assist people with severe problems like that. All I'm saying though is that real depression is nothing like a bad day at the office.

At the same time, I've had friends that get very involved in their online games and who form a real attachment to those activities. It seems reasonable natural to me in a scenario where you create an avatar to represent yourself, invest time and energy into building it up and use it as your mechanism to communicate with a larger society than just that on your PC.

Combine the two and you could end up with a situation like that. I don't know if this is one, but I certainly don't want to find out.

Ai, keep a couple of things in mind (and yes I respect your opinion), just to keep things in perspective.

Wis joked about his "I just want to die comment" immediately after making it.

For every person depressed enough to be serious with a statement like that in EVE hate mail, you'll see huge numbers of others that are identical that are simply an attempt to gain sympathy and reimbursement, or simply to try and make the ganker feel bad. Again, the serious ones don't tend to follow the statement with a joke about it.

And lastly, every case I have seen to date about Cyber Bullying was not only about minors, but more importantly was about harassment directed at the actual individual... their real identity.... not an anonymous in game character. Harassment in their personal email directed at them, texts directed at them, Facebook entries or pages directed at them... not at a character in a video game.

This last part is the most important. Unlike in a real case of Cyber Bullying, Wis could simply have bio massed the character or sold it and he would have been free of any harassment immediately.

I understand the point you are making, and I am not mocking it, however I think you should consider those points. Particularly the last one.
