Suicide Ganking: A Noobminer's Perspective

I am sick and tired of hearing carebears whine about how "unfair" suicide ganking is.

It's literally the only threat one faces when AFK mining in their barge in highsec!

And what's more, there's several useful strategies to prevent it!

First of all, we have the incredible cheat of immediate-update local, which means you always know everyone who is in system with you, all the time. If there's a certain character or corp giving you trouble? Mark them red with "bad standing", and when you see them pop into local, consider packing up and moving elsewhere, or doing something else for a bit! Not so hard!

Second, d-scan. If you're stubborn and decide you don't want to have to pack up your bags unless he really is on top of you, this is a really useful tool that helps you determine who is in your immediate area, right now. Again, almost a cheating mechanic, and just another way to cover your ass while you mine.

Third, and maybe most important, tank your god forsaken ship. Even a low-skill pilot (such as myself) can double the effective HP of his barge, making it a much tougher nut to crack and giving CONCORD (another delightful mechanic in the MINERS FAVOUR) plenty of time to respond and insta-kill that mean, mean ganker.

If all of this is too hard for you because you love to afk mine, I have a suggestion for you: don't mine.

I'm not going to lie. I afk mine all the time. But that also means I'm at risk of losing my (incredibly cheap) mining barge at any time. I know that, and that's the risk I run when I decide to fold the laundry, or cook dinner while I mine.

But 99% of the time, I'm at the keyboard. You know why?

Because I thoroughly enjoy not exploding, and because there's always more to do in this game.

Also, there's an in-game browser. I'm not sure if you're all aware of that, but that's how I'm typing up this post right now!

Mining, paying attention to local, and posting in GD all at the same time? He's some kind of savant!

Oh, you're too kind.

And one last piece of advice to miners: don't just mine all the time. Until and unless mineral prices enjoy an appreciable bump, there are much better ways to make money. And there's a lot more to eve than just mining or PvPing! It's not just one or the other - it can even be both!

Now, if I may voice my opinion on a few things, because I mean really, how often am I going to start a topic in GD?:

- WiS is silly, and should be super-low priority.

- Automatic updating local is silly, and should not be a thing.

- The Mittani has done more than enough by offering his apology. And for those of you confused, his crime wasn't teasing the player at Fanfest, nor was it people griefing him in-game (griefing, trash talk etc. is necessary in game, and cries of "I'm going to kill myself" should by and large be met with derision, particularly if they come immediately after losing a good chunk of ISK. To players who are feeling suicidal, keep in mind that both CCP and your local government likely maintain suicide hotlines, and that hurting yourself is never the answer). His crime was the words he spoke at Fanfest, when he encouraged others to encourage the "victim" to "kill himself". Crying "I'm going to kill myself" isn't a get-out-of-grief-free card, but neither is it an invitation for people to actively encourage you to kill yourself.

- Highsec in general is too safe, and needs reconsideration.

Anyway, this is all just the pointless ramblings of someone who has played for less than 2 months, but feel free to let me know what you think / troll me mercilessly in the thread below.

Thanks for your time.

I hate to burst your bubble, bud, but there isn't a blizzard of miners crying about suicide ganking. The only people yapping about suicide ganking are suicide gankers. Why? It's an extension of their psychology (the same psychology that makes them enjoy their passtime), a sense of deep-seated inadequacy and the need of a good spanking.

There is literally a post comparing suicide ganking to unrepentant "griefing" on the front page of GD right now, and laying it out like it's a cancer killing EVE.

That's insane.

Yeah, really a noob complaint about local. I don't think so.

1. Local is useless in most high sec systems. There are simply too many people for it to provide any intel of use (even if you set known gankers hostile).

2. In most high sec systems Dscan is not useful. There are too many people in system for it to give a useful warning.

3. Doubling EHP is nice, the suicide ganker is bringing enough alpha to kill triple your EHP.

Also the issue isn't so much whining as that the price of minerals is the leading driver of inflation in EvE right now.

I don't think you burst his bubble.

If you run into more than 2 a**holes in a day, you should probably look in the mirror.

Now, I'm not much of a miner per se, but I can tell you that there are at least 200 or more high sec systems with probably an average population of 2 on any given day.

Why the hell would you want to mine in Va Jita?

1. There is something like 30,000 people online right now. Outside of hubs and their immediate surrounding systems, most have 15-20 people in local. If you can't watch a list that short, I don't know what to say.

2. This is generally true, but it's still a viable tool to help "watch the skies".

3. If he's brought a ship to literally alpha mine, he deserves the kill regardless of context.

And if you really think that miners are whining about gankers because they're inability to mine is causing inflation and they just care so gosh darned much about the economy, I am of the opinion that you're giving them way too much credit.

Yeah. One post. Count how many are villifying the CSM, worshipping or condemning MITT, or are just ranting about how glorious all the new changes are. Puleeeze. Ring ONLY if there's an emergency.

One post today. In this forum alone. Not to mention the other forums, or what I've experienced in game.

But of all the things to argue about, this would be among the silliest, so let's not waste our time.

Let it suffice that I felt the need to post about it, and you disagreed quite passionately.

I respect your opinion (aside from your bizarre infantilization of suicide gankers. Kind of turned me on, but I disagree with your thoughts on their motivation in general).

OP is right and your post is a great example of a typical whine post from a victim of a suicide gank. And you don't even know it yourself.
