Orbital Bombardment would be much, much better.

It is apparent tassellation is highly desired by the player base.

I have an image of a capsuleer wandering into a seedy strip club (When we get WiS) and oggling planets jiggling around with tassles attached ...

I need to put the mouse down.

Edit: Gorrammit, the playerbase is FAST today.

You might wanna go read up on what tessellation actual does and for what types of surfaces.

i heard heavy tasselation can cause loss of sensitivity

Uhm, with asteroids it works pretty well, why shouldn't be the same with planets?

Yeah, I could see more depth being applied to the textures for planets, though it isn't as "straightforward" as it is for the art team to do tessellation on ships and asteroids. The latter are things you see up close that already have the visual appearance of basic geometry applied in a flat texture, while the art for planets really doesn't try to achieve the same effect. Not saying it couldn't be done, but it would take more effort to make them pop in the same way.

Tessellation effects on stations, though -- that I'd really like to have.

fine... http://www.nvidia.com/object/tessellation.htm

It helps certain surfaces or edges...and has little effect on others A.K.A negligible. It would help make the planets "rounder" which isn't an issue. Or in PI bring out a certain level of terrain features. However given the distance the camera is from the planet (our perspective) You don't see that many too begin with... Such things as mountain ridges, but not individual peaks... until your altitude decreases.

TD LR: It makes things rounder (edge smoothing) and can bring out certain detail...but that detail has to be there in the first place....and from the right distance.
