This bonehead screwed up, apologized, and is now being dragged further underwater by his constituency.

I'm still waiting for step 2.

Step two hopefully is an issued statement so people see his apology, and most likely him and ccp are talking about some damage control statement. Because of the publicity of the nature, and I am sure Mittani doesn't want harm to eve, We will probably see a statement of his actions, those of ccp, and possibly the attitude of the wis if he wants to.

An ideal damage control statement would just be:

1. stepping down from the CSM for this term. This would not remove him from notice. I am certain he would still be active in the process, as a consulary. Heck, he probably would be fine as a CSM still, just not as chair. I don't care one way or the other, but for public view.

2. voluntary ban? 30 day step down from the game, shows respect for the EULA and that rules to protect players from harassment are enforced. Shoot, set some cap lvl 5 skill, take a vacation to the tropics for a bit!

3. Statement about the line between eve and the rules violation. A statement about eve, how it is a harsh environment, no place is safe, but that it is a game and limits should be taken in that it doesn't give an excuse to deliberately target or ruin the game experience entirely (targeted and continual highsec griefing for sole purpose of tears a no go?)

The ramifications would be huge. Respect would be earned for CCP, reputation of eve and how it works would be gained, damage negated.

Come now. No parent does this. Most are just glad to have the little bastard out of their ass. I don't blame them...it's the first reason I don't have kids.
Bullsh1t. Most american parents these days are savvy Internet users and / or have been educated that the online experience needs to be heavily moderated when their kids are involved.

Many american parents make the time to look at what video games (and gaming systems) they purchase for their kids to ensure that the material is age-appropriate and, more importantly, appropriate for that specific child.

You must live in the us.

Only americans do that sort of things (well germans also).

Just wanted to point it out.

Very easily solved: cut out the middleman/parents. Dust is free. Yes, a parent could spy and search through the kids installed PS3 games but since it's free it's quite easy to re download. just saying...

It isnt free to buy, you also need a Dust account to play as I understand, even if you don't make use of the in game transactions.

What happened to that guy?

Also, cheating in EVE is ok. Cheating people out of their internet space credits is encouraged. Smack talk in local chat is part of the game. Winning by any means is the culture, it sells the game. That's what I love about EVE, I can expect clever, creative people to use any means possible to punch me down, steal my iskies, blow up my spaceships... in game.

But encouraging people to mass bully someone to commit suicide during a fan gathering is a bit harder to make look attractive. At this point it doesn't matter so much what it actually was (because most of us here know that it wasn't that bad), but how it looks.

I find it funny how people think the EVE community is going to look like a bunch of psychopaths but I don't see anyone thinking L2 players are murderers. I think EVE is quite safe guys, how about you just let CCP do its job now?

Except this person is a representative of the playerbase.

Who, luckily, agreed to step down so this is all moot.

The difference is that eve is known for being a harsh, dark, griefer scammer universe and it's image is done so in promotion of this fact that it is part of the universe. For eve it is being protrayed as being alot more of that and not new player friendly now. Just a matter of extents. L2, at least for me doesn't have the same rep as eve. The incident is considered an exception more than the norm. For non eve players, this is being taken as a norm for the community more than an extreme that it is.

Really feel for Mittani, the work and effort that he has put in for eve, plus who knows how much to maintain goons must really be a beatdown to seeing the negative press. For me, the thought of causing negative growth to eve would affect me alot more than any ban would. Don't like goons playstyle, don't like Mittani for how he acted on stage there, but is a part of eve, did alot and in the end would be a loss if left the community, hope we hear from him and ccp soon. Make some good stuff come of it.

The hilarious thing? All these sites are citing each other, who are all citing a known anti-Goonswarm troll blog. This is quite literally a manufactured scandal by a bunch of crybabies who can't stand the idea that Mittani got THE BIGGEST MANDATE IN EVE HISTORY.

In short:

You mad, pubbie? It sounds like you're mad. Definitely could be mad.
Oh ye of little wisdom. It's not impropriety, it's the appearance of impropriety. Some of "you" don't care about things like that. Most of "us" do. You're very much outnumbered in this respect, both in the sandbox and in the world at large. Oh. You can scorn and ridicule all you like. We expect that. It's the only card you hold. So, play it. Then curse the casino.

What is truly FUNNY is, Mittani behaved exactly the way he was expected to. So...if he's his own man, the leader his buddies say he is...why is he so predictable...like you?

We must accommodate the idiocracy.

Not really, the ESRB rating is on the box. Most parents in the US seem to ignore it and then ***** later. It's gotten to the point where the parenting portion is done by the government and laws. Apparently they feel that it's every bodies responsibility to watch children.

Didn't we agree to stop making new posts about this and contain them to the two already open that are 100+ pages long? And by we I mean CCP and by agree I mean they're locking everything but those two?

I just ran a search in google trends, and the popularity in EVE online searches went up by about 1% during the controversies (however this is probably more likely related to the recent EVE Forever trailer) The game is not famous for what happened, most of the gaming community not only ignores EVE related events but most don't know about EVE whatsoever.

As long as an event like this doesn't happen again, it won't define who we are as a community.

Most of the comments you can find seems like this community has been well defined and this has only reconfirmed every idea about it.

True, EVE's had a bad reputation amoung gamers for years. I thought things had been improving though, but looks like we're back in the crapper.

I think many here would be shocked to be told that most gamers and even mmo gamers wouldn't of heard of the Mittani or the goons. Hell even some eve players wouldn't know him from Adam. Your all over estimating EVE and the swarm. Outside of EVE they are not as infamous as you seem to believe and it will take a lot more than a few articles tucked away in crappy gamming websites to make a real impact

If you stand back and look at it, it all seems a bit silly. A player elected representative gets drunk, stupidly stands up and jokingly tells a player to go kill himself. Everyone goes up in arms and he appologises but for some it's not enough so they get on their high horse and demand his accounts be shut and some even want him thrown in jail (I think they were joking). Personally I don't know whats the worse part of all this is. The false sense of moral outrage, people trying to make political capital out of it all, the CSM chairman telling someone to kill himself or the fact that someone who has recently been divorced can still afford 27 accounts. TBH I'm rather bewildered by the amount of fuss this has made, but then again I live in the real world.

EVE is fairly well known, the Goons no idea how well they're known. I'd never heard of the Goons until I started playing EVE.
