It is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles; if you do not know your enemies but do know yourself, you will win one and lose one; if you do not know your enemies nor yourself, you will be imperiled in every single battle.

FC'ing is about knowing your enemies very well, knowing what your pilots are capable of doing, knowing game mechanics well enough, knowing the area your in to navigate and find targets, really its about experience... Also, even if your not 100% sure about what your doing... it's about sounding like you are :3, your fleet needs to trust you, otherwise people will not do what you say.

If your new to FC'ing, you can FC with a "backseat" FC that will give advice but not tell the fleet what to do (bad backseat fc's say what people should do, instead of simply suggest it to the fc)

In most cases if the actual FC knows what he is doing, the backseat FC's are in the way...

Unfortunately as an SWA FC I have no idea who I am killing today, tomorrow, or who is going to help me do it.
I say X up corp and I get like 30 of the most random rooks in the world.
Then I have to find ourselves a proper battleground for all of us to try to go die in.

Longest SWA record of stringed engagements so far was 3 which I say is pertty impressive since normally the first engagment wipes us out.

Most ships killed this season however is two. Last season (2007) max record was 5 ships in a fleet fight against RAZOR.

FCing in SWA is like hearding cats.

  1. repetition one way street - i think i mentioned 'repetition' on the part of the FC. i think i need to stress that it's on their part, not ours. having to repeat intel and stuff TO the fc is just ridiculous
  2. situational awareness - knowing how far the jumpgate is from ingate to outgate in the next system where your bait is aggressing, and which outgates are liable to be bubbled, etc.
  3. delegating scouting - knowing which scouts will be dependable for ping/pounce spots, Dscanning, ingate/outgate sitreps, bubble locations...Buljager for instance has a horrible accent and microphone but he gives great intel
  4. momentum - Keeping the fleet on a roll...not getting bogged down on gate without ping/pounce spots and hesitating
  5. red tape - proper broadcasting AND linking destination in fleet chat seems to really help as well as MOTD listing of fleet composition and destination. all that is brilliant stuff, although time consuming if only the FC does it. delegation good in that case
  6. communication - being able to avoid saying the word "jump" in random sentences not involving fleet jump. lol. Plus letting the fleet know who the lemming is...that's really important so peer pressure can work (and people know who the jackass is)
  7. reimbursement - having a reputation for reimbursing people who die listening to your orders, especially when the FC screwed up or didn't listen and was distracted by a squirrel...usually done via loot allocation
  8. stragglers - giving advice to stragglers, and even in some cases rescuing them...getting a reputation for rescuing lessens the usual gate camper bravado for pursuing. Although, sitting around waiting for hell to freeze over as some yahoo 10 jumps out wants to join your fleet is stupid.
  9. fun - being able to entertain, like others have said in this thread, is very important too. I think it helps create a relaxed, confident atmosphere
  10. shadoo-ness - knowing fleet composition and which targets can be hit. A bad FC recently yelled how we weren't hitting the primaries and the obvious situation was that they were outside range and even targeting for some ships. Actually, in that specific case, the fact the sabre wasn't being primaried at our gate was indicative of how lousy the FC was.

found some old thoughts back 4 years ago when i was first getting into pvp as an ex-carebear. one of my main conclusions of what it's like to be an FC is

"oh, you mean, i gotta learn how to spoon feed lazy fucktards with the attention span of fruit flies? guess so."

n00bs tend to go gate to gate and not think about stuff like pounce points
n00bs just don't understand warping to a person, even when on watch list
n00bs don't understand the concept of 'battlecomms'

anyways, great video and it really doesn't need a glossary. What do i think makes a great FC? repetition and 'situational awareness' (knowing terrain, good at intel)...what makes a bad FC? allowing backseat FCing from whiny bitches, foot dragging or waiting around for some guy 10 jumps out wanting to join, lack of 'rock paper scissor' tactical wisdom, confusing directions and dropping the 'j' word too much causing lemmings, plus not having a good scout. The biggest red flag of a bad FC is not having pounce points off gates and just loitering on gates too long and too many times (i'm not talking about the normal 'hold on gate' stuff for the +1 scout to report)

I think repetition is number 1. the patience to post destination YET AGAIN in fleet, and the wisdom to repeat transit/target orders verbally is key. repetition, repetition, repetition.

It's been a while since I've done FC-ing and its amazing how players keep coming up with new words for old tactics. I assume pounce/ping has something to do with the sniper and warp-to games around gates and stations, correct?

Edit: personally I was quite impressed by this FC, though the fleet is disciplined which makes a FC-role a lot easier Smile

yes, although alot of FCs have their own personality when it comes to slang words...i've even heard intense debates on whether the "-" is pronounced, "tach" or "dash"...personally, being a long time carebear not having a NAME for a system is really hard to not only speak phonetically but to listen to as well.

as for your link...rooks and kings and the clarion call vids are top notch.
